Currently can run about 1k. I want / need to build up stamina and endurance so that I can complete a 5k race. Time is no issue, though I would like to complete it this year, but I am not wanting to run 5k tomorrow.

You can follow the couch to 5-k program on coolrunnings.com! It's a great way to begin your regimen! It teaches you step by step how to gradually work your way toward running your first 5K! It even gives you a breakdown of a three month period, each day what you should be doing!

Good luck with your 5K!!!

Interesting, I am doing the same. Start slow with 3 times a week running/jogging. The other days do cardio exercises. Then increase your running by approximately 3 minutes per day after the 2nd week. As you feel you can tolerate the pace more, add days onto your running schedule. By the end of 2 months you should be able to tackle running every day. By the end of 3 months you should be up to 5K
