You are not a dumb dad! You are a gem of a dad for even giving this consideration!
Her hair will be that way for a while. I would suggest a cute and stylish bob. Tell the stylist to cut it at an angle, higher in the back to give it more "life" and the perception that there is more body! The sides should be a little longer than "chin length". This will be a great summer cut for her!
Good Luck Dad!

As a person with terminally straight hair I will warn against perming or any attempts to add body aside from a twist - straight hair is just straight. It is better to learn to style it nicely and in a way she can enjoy. Personally as a child i liked ponytails and barrettes these are both really simple and give her a sweet look so you don't miss the curl. Use a botanical detangler for shine and to prevent breakage, use silicone hair bands and metal clips with decoration over the plastic kind that slip right out. Straight hair can be beautiful. Next time you take her for a trim have the stylist show you tricks for creating cute styles - it'll make her feel special and help you feel more confident in helping her fix her hair in the morning.

That's very cool of you to help her with this. Cool dad award! But if her hair is thin DO NOT get it layered- it will only make it worse. Keep it about shoulder length- the longer it is, the less volume/bounce it has. The weight is too much for thin hair. For curls... my sister used to have these small yellow foam curlers when she was six. After she took a shower she'd have me or my mom roll her hair up in them. Normally it stayed curled (she has VERY thin hair) but if it still doesn't...after she takes a shower of bath or whatever, comb a little bit of light gel through her hair and then put it up in the foam curlers. This works really well in any type of hair- including thin six year old hair.
And again, you get the cool dad award for trying! My dad can barely attempt a braid, much curls. (Which is why my mom did my hair until I was13.)

hey like the first guy said, at least youre making the effort to try and do something with her hair..I would just leave it as until she gets a bit older..you dont want to add chemicals or put all that gel in there if you really dont have to...if you can just buy some of those hair rubberbands, some have those cute little colored balls on the end and just put her hair up in a pony tail or pig tails...let it grow a bit more and then try some of the other options such as perming but i honestly dont feel thats good for her right now...and u are not a dumb dad...good luck i know little girls hair can be a pain in the behind..the texture of her hair will change several times in a course of a lifetime...im living proof i went from some naturally curly nappy hair to wavy now its kinda straight.

Her hair is going to be like that for a while. She is only 6 years old and still has her baby hair. Do NOT perm it, there's over a 50% chance that the perm won't take because she is not old enough- and won't be until she gets older and her hormones start to change (along with her hair texture). Also it will damage her hair. So will heat styling. I'm actually quite surprised that you're willing to damage her hair at such a young age, are you putting her in tanning beds too?

dad work with what you got...she doesn't need curl or style she is 6 just buy the ponytail holders in the pharmacy that have the grip..take the hair on the top of her head and put that in a ponytail and let the sides and the back just hang
http://www.scunci.com/product_detail.aspx?gid=16&pid=9999999999
or just push back her bangs secure with a barrette
dad the trick is...do these styles when her hair is wet! Then i promise you they will stay:)♥

I'm 16 and I have very fine and thin hair. Always have, most ikey always will. There was never much I did with my hair. Kept it down or in a pony-tail. If you want a curl to stay in any way, usually you have to do it overnight or with, say a good curling iron and hair spray. Barrettes and clips are really hard to keep in as well...There isn't really anyway to make it thicker or more pliable. Maybe some Redkin volumising cream or shampoo maybe...Maybe talk to a hair stylist...

hi my cousin is a hairdresser with triplets and a little boy I'm only 13 but she tells me a Lot:) first of all you shouldn't condition her hair as she still has fine baby hair here is a few things you can try:
.put it in plaits from wet (any hair holds when it is wet)
.damp her hair by wetting the brush before styling it.
or you could try a kiddie DE-tangling that is sightly sticky to help it stay.
there is not much more you can do because of her age!
hope i helped:)

Sometimes a lack of nutrients and vitamins in a person's diet are the cause of fine and thin hair, and other times it is simply genetics. Unfortunately with her age you might want to consult her pediatrician. Most volumizing shampoos and conditioners have an extensive amount of various chemicals that may cause an outbreak on her young, sensitive scalp.
