Although a very good question, something that I struggle with (I just love food but I do tend to watch what I eat), I think that the more we restrain ourselves the more we crave.

Remember as a child (or even today as adults) when our parents told us not to do something we made it a point that we HAD to do it. Why? Because we were not allowed. I would say this is the same for us today.

Funny but I do believe this is so true. The more they tell us not to the more we want to lol.

I have been on a diet for about a month and a half. What I usually do to occupy myself so I wnt think about food is, I go walking about 8:00 so its not so hot,I walk about 2 miles (which isnt as bad as it sounds) I actually enjoy walking now, and I used to hate it. (find someone to walk with.) when I get home from work I normally go outside and water the flowers or something and just keep myself occupied outside and by the time I get done walking its about 9:00 and I go home and take a shower and watch tv for about a half hour and then go to bed. Seems to work for me. Hope you find your way. good luck!

It seems so hard doesn't it? I struggle with it too. Here are some tips that I have learned based on personal experieces and having been on weight watchers:

1. Don't keep food that you like to eat (junky foods that is) in the house. If you know it is in your house, you will think about it and want to eat it. Also, if it is in your house, don't make it acessible. You are less likely to eat chips that are sealed in a cupboard that is up high than if the bag is open on the counter. Out of sight, out of mind.

2. Replace your habit with another. For example, every time you think about eating, tell yourself to think about something else like going for a walk, watching tv, reading a book or whatever it is that you like to do. Visualize yourself doing it instead of going to get food, and then do it. Eventually when thoughts of food creep into your mind, they will be replaced with thoughts of other things.

3. Keep healthy magazines around and visable. Having magazines about people's success stories in sight helps remind you to stay on track. Knowing somebody else did it can help convince you that you can do it too.

4. If you are REALLY feeling that urge, leave the house or go somewhere else where you cant' access the food (not to a drive through!). If you just can't control yourself quite yet, replace what you are craving with something like it but healthier. For example, if you really want a muffin, then keep very low fat muffins in the house so if you need one, you are making a healthier selection.

5. Phone somebody you trust who knows you are dieting or watching what you eat and get them to distract you or keep you focused on your goal.

6. Write down your goals and write down that you will not binge or snack on unhealthy foods. The act of physically writing it down makes the goal concious in your mind and yo uare more likely to stick to it.

7. Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. If you only eat 3 meals in a day, yoru body gets incredibly hungry inbetween or clsoe to meal time and then, of course, you are only thinking about how hungry you are and food. If you eat many small meals, you never reach that starvation point and you don't think about food as much. Additionally, it keeps your blood sugar levels in tact so that you don't feel the urge to binge.

Eventually, as you get into a pattern, you will find that you stop thinking about food as much and you start thinking about other things. It takes a good month for this to become easier, but if you stick to your guns, it will! I lost 40 lbs and I know how much of a struggle it can be.

what works for me is if I don't have it in the house then I won't eat it. I get my food almost on a daily basis and don't leave bad food inside of the house.

btw:
chewing gum gets me MORE hungry, so I don't do it.

I eat 5-6 small meals during the day. then I only have to wait a couple of hours to eat again. it helps keep my metabolism going, too.

Like the above answer, chewing sugar-free gum/tictacs are a good method, and drinking water also helps.
