I know that the Berlin Wall isn't a great comparison, since it was meant to keep people IN east Berlin, not out. However, it seems that a lot of people want a militirized border that sounds ominously like it.
I'm from the Texas border region, the wall is going to be fast- tracked in federal lands. This means national parks and wildlife refuges will be the first to be severely disrupted because they are building not only the fence, but a road alongside it. There are beautiful refuges along the Rio Grande that thousands of people from around the world visit to see the rare birds that migrate through there. I used to go as a kid, and still go hiking there when I go home. Migrants don't cross the river through the parks.
I've contacted my U.S. representative, and he's doing everything he can to stop this travesty, but it may not work. Would you want this fence if it was in your back yard?

I actually agree with Bush (a rarity) on immigration. We need a guest worker program that makes it easier for people to come here temporarily and legally. That way people won't need to come illiegally.

Your absolutely right.
Americans need to look at the costs of this border security both financially and ecologically.
I too actually agree with Bush (also a rarity) on immigration. We so need a guest worker program that makes it easier for people to come here temporarily and legally. That way people won't need to come illegally and just destroy the fence and the wildlife.
Also I would not want a fence destroying by back yard and destroying the natural habitat. By the way great question.

We want a wall to keep the criminals and terrorists out. Without a wall anybody can come across. Probably 99 out of 100 that come now are good people, but that still means we are letting in 1 out of 100. And when we have 12-20 million illegals, you can do the math on how many criminals and terrorists that is.
Is stopping a nuke going off in New York worth giving up some wild life parks? Is stopping a serial killer that would murder your family worth killing a few wild animals?
Nobody is saying we should put up a wall and not let anybody in ever again. All people are asking for is a fence that will force people to come in the front door, where we can check them out. Immigration is great. Sneaking across the border in the middle of the night is not. Are you willing to bet the life of your family that the person breaking the law to cross a border is not a serial killer or terrorist?
Why do you have locks on your doors and windows? Why not just let anyone and everyone into your house and trust that they aren't going to rape, pillage, and murder you?
The only travesty is that there hasn't been a wall in place for the last 20 years.

A guest worker program will not address the problem. If we make illegals legal, then the same labor laws will apply that do for all other Americans will go into effect. That takes away the only incentive that these people bring, the cheapest labor available. Are you going to pay for a person who does not speak your language and undereducated when they cost the same as Americans who speak English and have a decent (though debatable) public education? No sir. It will bring in another wave of illegals hiding under the radar and taking these jobs for under the legal wage. That spells out more illegal immigration.
A wall won't fix the problem, but it will put a damper on many of the illegal immigrants, drug smugglers, and coyotes. If there is a wall with an armed guard patrolling it, there not going to try and cross unless they are suicidal. Smugglers will have to find other ways to get their wares into the country, which will be helpful overall. Overall, a wall is better than a guest worker program.

because mexico is NOT OUR country, its not like east and west germany is equal to mexico and new mexico
put up the fence,, you say the illegals DONT walk through the national park,,,, well you better be damn sure they will once they find out they didnt build the fence because of your little birdys you gotta look at the big picture man, if you moved to a new country you would learn the language, assimilate, do it legally. and many many thousands of people are doing that same process here, but why not the beans??? why dont they learn english, why dont they have to wait in line and fill out paperwork like all the others, why do you give them a free pass to cut to the front of the line, in front of all the people who do do it legally, that can speak english, that did go to college, that do have money and cars and the start of a life.
lets give all the breaks to the idiots who cant learn do not want to learn and have broken many laws just to get here to break more and not be punished for it..
open your eyes.... or maybe in a few years we will all just assimilate for them and speak spanish... yay
abren los ojos,, ya freakin jerk

Fence, not wall, and yes I would want it, especially if my back yard was located near the border. Why don't we make everything legal so that no one will have to break any laws to get a better life? Seriously, though, just making all the illegals legal will not solve the problems of overpopulation, lack of jobs, and other problems that are caused when people don't wait their turn to come here.

I want an Iron Curtain type wall on the southern border. We will be in that case the only country who had to build a wall to keep people OUT!

mutually as i'm no longer a brilliant supporter of establishing the fence, i've got confidence that the U. S. has the suited to chop back unlawful immigration through damaging financial impression and the disruption of our equipment and values. i think of there are extra advantageous the style to regulate immigration than a fence. Making Mexico concentration on this is archaic corrupt social equipment may be a solid start up. we've invaded international places that dealt with their voters with extra understand than Mexico. Mexico has the aspects and the manpower to be a considerable financial engine in the western hemisphere. the individuals are confusing workers, and can prefer to stay and artwork in Mexico than immigrate to the U. S.. There only is not any Governmental help for that. they like to stay the solid existence in Mexico city and ignore with reference to the plight of the undesirable of their u . s ..

If it meant keeping the influx of illegals out then my answer is YES! I want something that makes the Great Wall of China look like a kids art project, erected to prevent anymore of them coming over. Then I want the INS to do their job and get ones that have already illegally crossed over, OUT! I am tired of going to the emergency room with a real emergency to sit there and wait because they will get FREE health care and medical attention, while I have to pay for it. I am tired of sitting there with a friend who is bleeding from his head with a legitimate problem while they have their nine kids checked for the flu, because they weren't smart enough to prevent it, wash their hands or get a flu shot. I am tired of having to speak Spanish to an employee of the local McDonald's so that I can get my order correct. I am tired of hearing the announcements in the local wall mart in Spanish, or reading signs that are in both English or Spanish. This is the United States, we speak ENGLISH, all of our residents should too.
When my family emigrated to the U.S. they learned English right away, no one changed the signs or the announcements for them either!

Fences make good neighbors. I disagree somewhat with President Bush (also a rarity) in that the new legislation does not go far enough to penalize those who rent to and employ illegals. If they have no place to live and cannot sustain themselves financially here, they will have no choice but to repatriate.

I dont like the ideal of a huge wall either, but it looks like the best option. People have to realize that they must come here legally. There are too many issues with undocumented people - many are the victims of crime and would never report such things because of their status. Then of course theres the whole "You took mah jahb" thing. If they're paying taxes thats not a big deal. Documentation makes everything better....in theory of course...
