# Walk on the sidewalk where there is one. Where there is none walk on the road bank or on the right side of the road in single file, facing on coming traffic.

You always want to face on-coming traffic. So walk on the left side.

Walk outside of the vehicles' traveled way, on the leftside facing traffic so you may take evasive action in case of an errant vehicle. In California there is a sign that reads "Walk on Left Facing Traffic" - it's a regulatory sign, meaning it is mandatory to obey the message where the sign is posted.

You are supposed to walk against traffic so you can see a car coming and ride a bike with traffic.
