situational awareness. always look like a hard target. Alternate routs. complacency kills. trust gut instinct. wow I can just go on and on...why the question though??? Oh if you are clearing houses. FLASH BANG FLASH BANG FLASH BANG!!! if you know there is an insurgent in a room dont do as you were tought in MCT OR ITB and flood the room! pull out and request air support and throw a flash bang followed by a frag ok? and make sure u milk the damn frag. DARN BOOTS!!! use mirrows before going into a room. Trust me, walking into a room having some freak on speed shooting a AK at you on full auto isnt pretty. pray to god that thing jams on his first burst if you walk in. Hopefully u have a cool heade squad and team leader. Many times LT's Sgt's make bad calls under fire so if you can come up with a better idea dont hesitate to throw it out there regardless of rank

Remember the discipline you were taught, follow the orders of the sergeant and officers, do as your are told, and then be very lucky. I was a river rat in Nam, and the other three on my boat were killed when the Cong shot our boat out from under us. I was rather badly wounded, but I managed to survive. I consider that to be mostly luck. I hope you do survive Iraq. Not everyone will.

A lot of it is fate, luck or whatever you want to call it. But if you put yourself around the best people possible, and watch each other's backs at all times, you'll stand a much better chance.

Pay attention to your surroundings at all times. I notice quite a few troops acting like they're on a weekend trip at Disneyland.
