My boss asked me if I knew anyone that would like to take that job. Its a much higher pay and of course, more responsibilities. I would like to take the job but I dont know how to tell my boss that I want it and that I would like to move up. What would you sugest?

You sound like you might be feeling a bit guilty about wanting the position. Don't be!! If your boss has already entrusted you with additional responsibilities, it shows he has confidence in your abilities. I think he'd be comforted in hiring someone to fill the position that he already knew, knew their ethics, work habits and attributes. Obviously it doesn't mean you are the only one who wants the job or are a shoe in. My advice is to ask if you can schedule some time to speak with him. Tell him how much you enjoy working in the department. Explain to him that you are ready for further challenges and want to expand your responsibilities to be an even greater asset to the company and that to accomplish this you are interested in applying for the open position. Ask for his feedback. I'm sure he would gladly have this discussion with you.

I hope you go for it and I wish you lots of success.

Approach is as you would with any open positions. Depending on how well you know your boss and what type of relationship you have...

Make up a resume with all your accomplishments at that company... I did this one and not in a traditional format but in a newsletter type with headlines and all.. My relationship with my then manager was very good.

Also see if you can take on some resonsibilities while they are interviewing too so that you can show them you can do the job.

Are they asking for a degreed individual?

Good luck

Ask your boss what the requirements are for the person who will get the job. Tell him you are interested. Don't be shy. What's the worst that happens? If he says no, you're no further behind than you were - and he might say OK. Stress anything that you've done that relates to the other job.

Good luck.

Be strong and insist on an interview for it, define yourself in the qualities they are looking for. Most bosses appreciate a worker that is confident and looks to upwardly mobile. You have a big advantage in that you already know the company and personnel, make sure you emphasize that.

Tell him you are interested in interviewing for the position and you are already with the company so you have the general idea how to do things.

Since he asked you I assume that your boss values your opinion so he obviously respects you. So you should just tell him straight up that you want the job.

Your boss should understand and should admire your motivation. Tell your boss, right now!
