They didn't.

During the war the British invented the tank. The French had the best artillery. The British and French had better aircraft.
Both sides used the same chemical munitions.

So, what did the Germans have that was better?

BTW, for all you who are not paying attention, Hitler was the Fuhr in WW2 not WW1. WW1 did not see jets, v-1 and v-2 rockets or any of the other things you are thinking of.

WW1 was mostly an infantry and artillery war. The battle of Cambrai (as conducted by the Brits), is considered the first true use of combined arms tactics in history. THIS is the basis of the combined arms tactics often referred to as "Blitzkrieg." There are a tremendous amount of uninformed answers on here today.

All historians agree that the French 75mm was the best field gun of the day. The Brits did invent the tank and combined arms tactics. The only thing I might credit the Germans with was they had a better rifle in the Mauser.

Information on WWI

I realized you asked about WWI and not WWII after I wrote an answer. So I will leave the WWII section after this just for reference.

For WWI (also called the Great war and the War to End all Wars) the Germans had top technology for many fields, including Chemistry (they developed chemical weapons despite the fact there was an international agreement against it), Engineering (they developed many successful technologies like the machine gun in the bi-plane, and many improvements for submarines and gas-powered engines).

Those are the reasons they had superior technology, but they were very quickly surpassed by the British and the US, not only technologically, but also with human power, that is, the Allies more human power than the Germans, forcing them to eventually surrender (same with their allied forces).

For lots of information, go to Wikipedia. You can follow the links bellow.

Information on WWII

The Germans under the Nazi control were doing whatever it would take to develop the best technology possible to make their forces the most powerful force in the World. Because of the regime they had, scientists, engineers and anybody working for them to develop new technology were scared they would loose their family and their own lives if they didn’t do as requested.

It was pure oppression and control, but it worked very well for the Nazis as they were able to develop a huge army, air force, naval force, and many new technologies like rockets and jet engines.

They didn’t just develop that technology, they would steal it from anybody (including the US), and they also used many non-Nazi and non-German scientists for their purposes. But because of the way things turned out, they lost the War. Reasons are many, but the simplest ones are the fact that the Nazis went crazy and thought they could expand their “network” beyond their own forces capabilities.

If you add to that the fact they let some “key” scientists go out (like Albert Einstein), they did not have the resources anymore to create the ultimate weapon (Atomic Bomb). Still, the bomb was never used to defeat the Nazis as they pretty much felt on their own “stupidity” by trying to take over the Russians and many other regions without taking full control of what they “had” in their hands already.

As a result, they lost the war, and the race to create the bomb went to nowhere. Still, the bomb was finished and tested here in the US, and was used later on against Japan to force them to surrender. As we all know, it worked, and we (the Allies) won the war.

In the beginning of the 20th century, especially before the rise of the Nazis, Germany had the leading minds in science and engineering in residence. There is also a national pride in craftmanship in Germany that continues into modern times. These combined to help keep the Germans on the cutting edge of technology though it also led to German equipment often being over-engineered and impractical in real use.

WW1 means World War 1, so any reference to Hitler is outside the question asked.

The ruling State in what is now called Germany in WW1 was Prussia, there also was a number of seperate kingdoms such as Bavaria, Baden, Wurtemberg to name but a few. And some principalities.

The Prussians had quality, but not enough raw material to manufacture quantity, also as they could not break the status quo on the battlefield before the intervention of the U.S. who were about to commit massive amounts of aid and troops to the war.

This along with the hugh amounts of losses of manpower along with ever smaller reserve's, and the naval blockade which prevented them getting any raw materials including food supplies, was the main contribution to them losing the war.

Well, they were fighting the French. Germany had been a militaristic country since at least the mid 1800's. They were putting money into military research while other countries were fighting colonials wars against people who carried spears.

they didnt; during first world war the forces were roughly equaled in technology and weapons used. both sides had machineguns, both have aeroplanes, both used posion gases.

you were asking about FIRST world war, weren't you?
so no Hitler, no jets, no death camps, no Blitzkrieg, few tanks of lower quality when compared to Allied

3 Reasons:

BMW
Mercedes
Daimler Motors (now part of Chrysler)

These companies were then, as they are now, far ahead technologically of thier American and British competitors. Once Hitler ordered them to turn thier manufacturing and engineering expertise to fulfilling military needs, the Germans were equipped with the most efficient killing machines on the battlefield.
