Your first year of high school is a transitionary period. It is taking you from having the teacher guiding and walking you through everything....to you doing everything yourself.

Most of this is to prepare you to have teachers talk at you in college and really basically cover all of the topics you read and completed before you ever go to class (that is how college works.)

It might also be because the curriculum at your elementary-middle school was too easy. I think the first thing you should do is talk to your teachers.

I did this both in high school and in college and it improved my grades tremendously. Explain to them which part of the assignment you completely understand (even if it's only a small bit) and then the parts you are not getting at all.

I come from a family of geniuses (cept for me :) Three of my sisters are straight A students (one completing Human Biology at MSU with a 3.94 gpa.)

The one very consistent thing that I saw in all three of them at separate times that was CoNStanT was that they worked on their assignments with their friends. Homework was nothing that they ever really did alone. If they were talking on the phone all night, meeting one, two or four friends from class, that was their secret.

I taught my daughter all their tricks. She skipped K is a young 7th grader in a 9th grade enriched Algebra class. Many times she will call 3-5 friends some nights. There have been several times when MOST of the kids didn't get the assignment and when they all told the teacher the next day - the teacher realized that maybe a bit more teaching was needed.

The other thing I think is critical is calling in other adults as support. You have got to have an uncle, cousin, parent of a friend who is smart in different topics.

Overall the trick to all of this is NOT doing this, handling it, dreading it, not understanding it ALONE. You must do all three of those things above. Get out some chips and dip and phone all your friends - after all they have the same assignments and your parents will think you are just the most perfect child if you really sit there trying to figure it out. Let your teachers know right away - there is nothing wrong for making them earn their money, and get the help from adults.

Don't feel badly - you will make the adjustment and it will go much better and get easier, but I am telling you - even through college I talked to the TAs regularly. Start having fun and making your homework a social thing - it can create a ton of NEW friendships and if you have a group of girls and guys- it can end up a lot of clean positive fun.

(just a final reminder - don't you dare worry if you don't have a lot of friends - pick up the phone and call people you do or DON"T know well and just be direct about asking for help on an assignment.)

HAVE FUN - HS is a pain at times but overall A HUGE BLAST.

I used to feel the same way until I had to actually teach. Let me tell you that teachers do way more work than any student. As a student teacher I had to spend hours every evening just to prepare for the next day. If I had only known how easy I had it and how easy it would have been to get straight A's in High school I would have gladly put in the hours every night. Your teachers are not unfair. You earn the grade you earn. If you are having trouble then go talk to your teacher, but don't blame them for your inability to learn or unwillingness to study. Teachers are not your enemy. They are simply trying to teach you something and they have to come up with "different things" just to keep your brain functioning and your creative juices flowing.

I take it you're not planning on college? Because high school was a piece of cake. It was tougher adjusting to 1st year college.

It would probably help if you learned to spell correctly. Use the "spell checker" function. It's free and it corrects spelling errors for you.

Start looking into going to a trade school. The world always needs more mechanics, plumbers, technicians, etc.

Don't become a hairdresser, there's already too many of those. Maybe you can get a job answering phones at a call center.
