I believe this differs from state to state. Check with your local gun shop, they might know. However, most companies will only sell body armor to law enforcement, military, and other approved users.

In Michigan it is legal to purchase / wear a vest. If that vest is worn during the comission of a felony it is a charge unto itself. (possession of body armor during the comission of a felony). Thats why most (all?) departments practice body armor drills, two to the chest two to the head.

in every state that iam aware of, any adult can purchase/own a bulletproof vest. security guards, armored car drivers, bodyguards and some E.M.S. personnel all wear them. in many states it is illegal for a convicted felon to own, wear or posses a bulletproof vest, this is the only restriction that iam aware of....hope this helps.

United States law restricts possession of body armor for convicted violent felons. Many US states also have penalties for possession or use of body armor by felons. In February of 1999, the late Russell Jones a.k.a. "Ol' Dirty Bastard" was arrested in California for possession of body armor by a convicted felon. In other states, such as Kentucky, they do not prohibit possession, but deny probation or parole for a person convicted of certain violent crimes while wearing body armor and carrying a deadly weapon.

You can purchase and wear your own body armor. The only time it is illegal is if purchased by a convicted felon or used in the commission of a crime.
