My chihuahua also does this. He has had quite a few skin problems. We were taking him to the vet for a cortisone shot every 2 weeks for a few months, and also bathing him with special shampoo every other day. It was fairly pricey. He isn't as bad now but I did find some aloe vera gel stuff for dogs' sensitive skin and it works soooo well! And for him, he won't let us touch his feet because they are sensitive, so either he chews them off when they get too long or the vet does it when we're in there. I don't think it's a huge deal though. Do his feet/skin bother him? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

My dog sometimes chews her feet and nails. It's probably some sort of allergy. Have you started feeding her something different? I talked to my vet about it and she asked if maybe I changed what I mopped the floors with, or if there's any way my dog could've come into contact with fleas. A lot fo dogs have flea/flea dander allergies. I would check out those leads, maybe change her food and when you mop the floor go over it with water to get up the chemicals.. Also, put some topical flea medicine on her if you aren't already. If none of that helps you should take her to the vet.

Eliminate plastic drinking containers which seem to cause allergies in dogs. Often small bumps will even appear around their mouth. Chihuahuas are nervous dogs or high strung. Give her plenty to play with at all times.

It does sound like allergies - but it doesn't necessarily mean a food allergy. My greyhounds have allergy problems in the spring, and nibble on their feet constantly. My vet gave me something to stop it and it's worked like a charm!

it could be allergies. My chihuahua does that too. Although, his nails are really long and when we cut them they are still too long (his red vein or whatever is very long so we can't really trim them down a lot).

Nerves. My wawa does it too. I try to keep him from it, though, because hair lodges down at the gumline, and can cause tooth loss.
