It was in brief a movement to encourage people not to co-operate with the government in power (foreign power, viz; British empire) then! For Gandhi to have started it, there was an element of selfishness in that he had been mistreated by the whites (people in power ) while he was in South Africa where he went to practice law! Well, it served as a spark to start the wild fire in India under British rule! As the saying goes, a single spark can lead to prairie fire!

The Chauri-Chaura incident resulted in the suspension of the movement. The movement was supposed to be non-violent but some protesters set the Police station at chauri-chaura afire resulting in the death of British as well as Indian police officers present and thus the movement was called-off.
