When I stepped on the brake on downhill, brake is working fine. Suddenly, the brake slipped and I am rolling downhill fast. When I got at the bottom, I tried the brake again. It's working fine. Happened to me about 5 times on different instances. Is this something to do with ABS? I'm driving a Honda Civic Dimension. Can anyone help? Thanks.

The weird thing is it only happens on downhill. Never had problem with braking on flat surface. I have checked the brake fluid its ok. I just want to know what possible parts are busted as I don't want to get ripped off by mechanics. Thanks a lot for the answers. :)

The downhill is about 45 degrees. When I run very very slow, it never slipped. I'll have it checked too asap.

Check your brake fluid level in the reservoir above the brake master cylinder (engine compartment driver's side top at the firewall). If it's really low, then you've got a brake fluid leak in one of the wheel cylinders or calipers or in a rusted brake line. If the fluid level is ok, then you may have a failing master cylinder if the brake pedal goes to the floor and then recovers later. You may also have to have your brake system bled of all trapped air and water contamination. When you get the brake system checked for this problem, have the shop flush your old brake fluid and install new brake fluid. That will make your brake system last longer too.

1. There is no such thing as a 45 degree downgrade on any road. That would be a 50% grade. The worst I've ever seen was 25% and that is insanely steep.
2. If your brakes are doing that, you need to take the car to a qualified brake mechanic immediately. On the back of a tow truck at that. Do NOT drive the car until you get it fixed! It's not likely the ABS that causes it. ABS systems are designed to act like non-ABS systems if there is any failure in the ABS system. Most likely cause is a leak or a failed master cylinder. At any rate, you'll have to put faith in the expert to find the cause and not rip you off.

Could be any of a number of things, but I'm betting you'll find it's the master cylinder bad and allowing the pedal to go to the floor when you are holding the brake.
But whatever it is, it's dangerous to continue driving with it doing that, so get it fixed before you have an accident where you hit someone in the rear.

It sounds like your master cylinder is bypassing which lets brake fluid seep past the seals in the unit.It also could be in your A.B.S. but then usually you would see a warning light on.Have the master cylinder checked out first. If you had a bad line or brake hose the pedal would always go down what your describing sounds like the master.Good luck

If you do not know what is wrong with something as important as the brakes I would hope you would take it to a garage to be checked out before something BAD happens
paying someone that knows what they are doing will be cheaper then if you are in an accident.

Hi, The car normally represents you as a person. Do you feel out of control and unable to stop yourself from the direction you feel you are travelling in? You said the person at the side seems to be able to stop the car and you are surprised by how they do this? Do you feel powerless? Maybe you are wondering how others seem to be able to control their life and would like to be able to do the same? Remember, we are all as powerful as one another (all resides within). A very powerful technique is to write on a pad of paper before you go to sleep a question where you ask your subconscious (for example) to show you CLEARLY what course of action would be best for you to take next? Or what is it trying to show you now? Another technique I was taught by a counsellor was to be the other people/objects in the dream. So, for example, what would the person outside the car tell you now?? Good Luck xxxxx (it's all good! - the reason you're having dreams like this is because your powerful inner self is trying to get you to notice that things are not, in fact, helpless!)

I'm not going to tell what may be wrong... you said it has done this 5 times and you are still driving it. How soon will it be before you kill yourself or some one else before you get them repaired? Don't drive it, get them fixed, or at least don't drive it around my part of the country.
