Apart from "42" or whatever it was!
It is simply do the best you can...At the end of it you will be shown what you have done and what you need to do. According to how well you did you have some "time" up there, then its back down again. Don't worry you have several million years as we see it to do it in. By the question I would say you are not very far into it!

Since we're here for a relatively short period of time i think the meaning of life is you should do whatever makes you happy as long as others don't suffer in the process.

generally you are born you grow up you have kids or not, have major changes happen to you, you get old and then you die.

The essence of life is to worship your Maker (God). It is said in the Qur'an that Allah has not created mankind except to worship Him n he prescribed ways. You worship Him by obeying His commands and being nice to fellow men. That is the way to happiness and eternal salivation. No faith has answered this unique question like Islam.
