My Mother was the librarian at an Elementary School for 30 years. She was the librarian there for several years and then the school built a new library and she moved into it and was there until she retired about 3-4 years ago. Everyone loved her (and they still do). They even gave her Educator of the Year before she retired. Two of her granchildren are currently in the same school and she has two more that will be attending it in a few years. She has cancer. I would love for the library to be named after her before she passes away. What a wonderful honor and tribute to such a wonderful person. How should I go about doing this? I know the City School Superintendant and he knows and worked with my mother for years. Do I just ask him or what? Can't hurt to try, can it?

I'd start with the school principal. She knows the regulations and the ins and outs of dealing with the school board. I'd start there. No, it can't hurt to try. The worst that could happen is that you'd discover that there was some policy prohibiting that, or there would be some opposition, but even if that were the case, the situation wouldn't be any different than it is now.

Well, it's all well and good that you want the library named after your mother, who seems like a well deserving lady. I however, believe it should work the other way around. The school should approach you and your family. Personally it just seems a little rude to me. Also, while it is obvious she has made a contribution to the school, I think that most people have to make monetary donations to be honored like that. Best of luck though.
