A considerable number of people associate celibacy with the sexual abuse of minors (see links). If you did not have a spouse available for sex (no spouse all, or perhaps s/he is away visiting relatives, or is in a coma), how long would it take you to start molesting minors?

I don't see celibacy associated with sexual abuse of minors. I see deranged people associated with said abuse. I have been away from my wife for long periods in my career, never did it make me think "darn,I need to go molest a kid"Anyone that states that it does is morally repugnant

Absolutely not. The fact remains - those who abuse purposely take jobs where they can be in close contact with children, whether that be a pastoral role, a teacher, a Boy Scout leader, etc. Stating fact, a chils is MUCH more likely to be abused by a family member than by a priest or anyone else.

Markky - please, do a little research. Celibacy is NOT the reason nor the cause.

"NEW YORK (ABP) -- With awareness of sexual abuse by clergy in Southern Baptist churches on the increase, a well-known television newsmagazine is taking notice.

In show -- scheduled to air the evening of April 13 -- called "Preacher Predators," ABC's "20/20" will examine the problem of sexual predators in Baptist churches as well as those of other denominations."

"NEW YORK (ABP) -- ABC's "20/20" examined the problems with clergy sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention April 13, warning that some convicted "preacher predators" remain on an SBC's list of ministers available for employment.

Featuring interviews with Southern Baptist Convention president Frank Page and clergy sex-abuse-survivor-turned-activist Christa Brown, the program investigated how denominations without hierarchical authority can protect vulnerable parties from abuse by ministers.

The show also featured footage of Ken Ward, a former Southern Baptist preacher from Texas who admitted to molesting 40 boys during his tenure. Ward served five years in prison and is now under house arrest."

I don't think a normal person would start molesting minor because their spouse is away. If they are that desperate for sex, they can find it.

I am amuse at the comments made that the temptattion comes from altar boys being around priest all the time. Ha! At daily Masses, I never see an altar boy unless it is a school Mass and the kid comes over from the school, vest up and then returns to his classroom after Mass.
Sunday Masses, usually the kid comes with his/her parents and returns home after Mass with his/her parents.

I believe a lot of the training of the altar boys comes from older altar boys.

is it celibacy as long as no one else is involved in my sex life?
My last girlfriend moved out in the 90's (we're still friends) and after maybe a year or two of dating from the internet, dating clubs. phone line hookups etc. I woke up one morning to realize that I didn't have to do anything to placate or impress anyone else. I didn't have to shave, dress to impress, eat food I didn't like, watch TV or movies that didn't interest me. After a few more years of regular porno I discovered furry fandom and anime so for all of this century so far I haven't even had real women on media in my sex life. My form of celibacy is very liberating. It's 10 years and counting.

Never happen. I've been without sex for 4 years at a time. My hand served me perfectly well.

I can understand how NOT masturbating might lead a person to the bad decision to molest children. 'Deadly sperm buildup' can adversely affect a person's thinking and judgement. I know that if I don't release at least once every three days all I can think about is sex, and I mean ALL. I really don't like to be in that mental state.

Pangel: It's different for guys. Testosterone builds up if not released. Total celibacy (including DIY) is very inadvisable for males.

There are priests that sexually abuse children. Not one, not two, but a lot of them.

I always get a little annoyed when Catholics start defending those priests, as if it were an attack on the Catholic religion. It's NOT an attack on the Catholic religion, it's just a simple fact that there are a lot of priests who abuse children.

It's good to try and figure out the reason behind those facts. In my opinion celibacy plays a role in this. I refuse to believe that the Catholic church simply hired so many nut-jobs as priests. (Stating that _would_ be an attack on the Catholic church, btw)

I think we should really examine what celibacy does to a person's brain. I fail to see why it would be bad to examine that.

I mean, I hope that you, as every normal person would want, do wanna know what causes this, right? Because, in the interest of our children, it needs to stop.

I can never put this evil down to sexual need myself Meg,for me it comes under the heading of perversity which scripture warns against, many people lead celebate lives by choice and would never commit this vile act.

The sex abuse scandal has more to do with homosexuals in the priesthood than it does with celibacy in the priesthood.

Whats weird is its the gays that are kicking the hardest.
