All sorts of bad things do happen in jail, yes. The guards try to control it, but it can't always be stopped. Tell your son not to commit crimes next time.

Jail is much nicer than prison. I hope he learns how to conduct himself so that he does not do more serious time.

The fact is, Detention Officers make about $13 an hour where I worked. Although they try to do their job, they are horribly under-staffed and over-worked. Even if they saw the assault, they would have to call in every available officer and lockdown everyone before they could take effective action.

Our intake room had about 20 guys in it sleeping head to toe and lined up next to each other. There was a lone crapper in the corner. There is no way a detention officer could go into that room safely if there was a fight. On the plus side, rape is very rare in most jails, that is more of a prison problem. Jail inmates are there less than a year and are a less serious threat.

Stay out of jail is all you can take from this.

You mention a very serious issue that is certainly not one segregated to just Galveston, Tx.

Sadly, most people are overtaxed as it is. Law enforcement is not considered an "urgent" issue because we think to ourselves "whens the last time I've ever had to call the police."

I'd submit that because one has NOT had to call the police...they're doing their job. Unfortunately, there's just not enough officers to go around due to budgetary constraints or lack of a good tax base to properly support law enforcement. This includes hiring officers used in the jail system.

Though one blogger suggests there's been people "murdered over a bologna sandwich" my particular metro jail has been fortunate enough to avoid such an issue. This does not mean that we have sufficient manpower, because we don't. As such, there are unfortunate situations that occur in a flash of a moment where tempers rise and a sudden dispute occurs.

I would strongly suggest that you contact your county commissioners or city counsilmen and voice your concern for the circumstances occurring within your jail system. Demand they take appropriate actions to hire sufficient personnel to do the job!

In hopes that your son is OK....best wishes.

assaults are a sad fact of being in jail.they assault you for absolutely no reason.if you do not defend yourself then they will turn you into a punk for sexual favors.it is a unwritten rule not to tell the officers who assaults. if you did tell they will assault you again and call you a snitch.officers will always stop a fight if they see it.they may here all the noise but when they get there it will be over. knowone will tell the officers what happened.i retired from a teas sheriff's dept and will be glad to answer any questions you might have.i understand how you feel but what happened is a fact of life in jail

Give it up, Mom. There is nothing you can do. He will learn the procedure for getting along in jail. If he can't make bail he is stuck. Don't call the jail again or it could work against him by the guards. No, they don't jump right in and stop things unless they are in the mood. He did the crime, this goes along with it, sorry to say.

My brother is a prison guard in a medium security state prison in New York. He said the prisoners attempt to fight all the time but the guards are trained to control them. My brother is highly trained in self defense and conflict resolution. The prisoners have made weapons out of toothbrushes and plastic eating utensils but he's trained to look for that kind of stuff. I can't believe that Texas would be much different.

There should have been a report filed by a jailer for assault. Just because they are inmates in a county jail doesn't mean that they can fight in jail and get away with it because they have other charges. MAKE SURE THEY FILED A REPORT.

People get murdered for baloney andwiches in jail. Be glad they haven't gang raped him yet, or maybe they did and he is too ashamed to tell you. At least he may learn to behave out of this, if he survives.
