I have a 17 week old Lab puppy. She has had all her shots except her Rabies shot which she will be getting next week.

My question is do I still have to worry about parvo?? We are going camping this weekend and I am sure there will be other dogs there. We keep our puppy on a leash and all the other people are supposed to as well. Do I still have to worry about the Parvo virus being out there?? So many people are losing their puppies to parvo! I keep wondering are these people not getting the shots??? Or are the puppies getting the virus even though the puppies are getting the shots????

Thanks for any answers!!

giving the series of puppy shots should give your puppy protection against parvo , but keep in mind that nothing is 100 percent, but you have done all you can to protect your puppy so go and have fun with him.

Just remember that the shots work on the "herd" principle. If 90% of the herd is protected, the herd is protected. So nothing in life is 100% foolproof.
The way the puppy series works is not at all the way many people think. The puppy is NOT half protected after the first shot and 3/4 protected after the second. Instead each shot either did the job or it didn't.
This is because as long as a puppy is nursing and for a short time after being weaned the puppy is protected by it's mothers immune system. As long as the mothers immune system is active, it will treat the shot as any other virus and destroy it. The problem is that it is impossible to know when the mothers immune system will shut down. It can happen in just a couple of days, making a shot one week after the last time they nursed necessary. Or it can remain active for as long as two months, making the second to forth shots necessary. So the idea behind doing a series is to reduce the time that the puppy would not be protected to the shortest amount of time possible.

As long as you have waited the proper time for the vaccines to work and not let your dog out until 2 weeks after the final vaccination you should be good to go. However no vaccination is 100% and there is always a slim chance that any dog could pick up something it has been vaccinated against, if that happens even though it's been vaccinated then it's just one of those things. you should stop worrying and be happy that you have given ypour pup the best start.

She will be fine. Since she is too young for the rabies vaccine, I wouldn't let her run in the woods smelling skunks, but she will be fine.
Parvo is a virus. If the puppy is vaccinated correctly-not too early and with a 2-booster series- they are protected from the disease for many years- perhaps their whole lifetime. Once the titre is in their blood they will never get the disease.

How long has your pup had all her shots? Even though Vaccinated, just as in Humans there are ALWAYS some risks. No vaccine is 100% effective however they are about 98% effective if she has had the last set of shots at least 2 weeks!

in case you get carry of an excellent parvo attempt I dont comprehend why they only sent you living house with antibiotics and pedyalite. My dogs purely had parvo and he or she replaced into taken to the scientific institution on monday morning and didnt come living house until friday night, she replaced into addicted to IVs and antibiotics there, while she got here living house she replaced into on a undeniable meals plan and nevertheless on antibiotics. (and the vet pronounced that we caught it early, she didnt even initiate the bloody stools until while we've been given to the vet) while she began getting ill she wouldnt even upward push as much as walk and in accordance to the vet it replaced right into a stable 2 days in the previous she could even get up and wag her "tail" I dont somewhat comprehend what it could desire to be considering the fact that its an on and rancid ill.. i'm hoping issues get better for her! **my dogs had all her photos for parvo too, the vet advised me some dogs our bodies purely dont use the vaccine like they're meant to, its kinda like the flu, purely considering the fact which you get the shot doesnt advise you wont get the flu, its no longer one hundred% **oh yeah, in case you have different dogs you may desire to deal jointly with your place. disinfect everywhere the dogs has been, this could cut back the hazards of the different dogs getting it, the dogs that have been given the parvo wont be waiting to get it returned for 3 yrs (what the vet pronounced) and your puppy would be laying off the virus for 4-6wks so dont take it everywhere the place there will be different dogs.

most likely dont worry about it here are some steps you can take:
dont let you dog sniff eat or lick other dogs poop
dont let it sniff other dogs butt (which is common in dogs ) or let another dog sniff your dogs butt(who know what other dogs he has sniffed)
most of all have a GREAT TIME!

oh and make sure it is on flea tick and heartworm protection (ie frontline and heartguard)

if its been that long since the vaccination you should be fine, slip your pup some echinacea starting a day or two before the trip to give her immune system a boost just in case :)
