If you are travelling with 3 others I would rent a car. If you were on your own, no it wouldn't be worth it.

Try this site http://www.standbycars.com.au for cheap rates.

For Car Rentals at Brissy airport go to http://brisbaneairport.com.au/content/standard.asp?name=Car_Rentals

For how long are you going to stay in Australia? If you want to travel around the country it's cheaper to rent a car. If you want to stay only for a few days you can take public tranport such as the shuttle bus available at the airport. Ask at the airport desk for the price.

depends where you want to go. around the city travel by public transport. Travelling out west it would better to hire a car but take into account the cost of insurance and petrol. If you share the costs with 3 it will be cheaper of course. one thing to remember is no care hire co will cover you if you go offroad.
that's anything but bitumen road. Don't worry most main roads are sealed.

If you are going to be mainly in Brisbane, use public transport. It is good and efficient and there are trains and a shuttle bus from the airport to the city which connect to the main public transport system. If you are planning trips away from the city, hire a car for the trip.

I don't really know other, but I think public transportation is really fun and meet new people when you are travel. It's not too expansive either. If you want to have more freedom, hey rent a car is not a bad idea. You could try at AirZu. They compare many car rental websites for your money.

sharing with 3 others and staying for 6 days - I would advise to rent a car and you should get a discount, that way you can go wherever you please and make stops here and there.
