aren't they supposed to be peaceful because they're "dharmic religions"? what a joke! listen to this..the buddhists and hindus in sri lanka are at war with eachother and can't stand the sight of eachother,the buddhists treat the hindus like second class citizens and purposely made the national language sinhala so that the tamil hindus would find it impossible to get jobs,the tamils have to go through a lot of difficulties to get to universities....seems to be a lot of hate going on don't you think? and people say christians are violent! PAH!

get your facts straight you ignorant little liar before you go off criticising other countries and 2 of the most ancient religions in the world! from what you have said it's obvious that you've got your facts from some pro-LTTE idiot....and before you think that i'm against LTTE because i'm a Sinhala Buddhist,let me inform you that i'm a TAMIL,i'm a HINDU and i'm PROUD of it and yes i'm AGAINST the LTTE because i love my country more than a group of barbarians even though they ARE tamil .the original owners of this country are SINHALA BUDDHISTS AND TAMIL HINDUS . muslims came to the country much later by muslim traders settling down ,and christianity was introduced only through invasions by the Portuguese, Dutch and British,but most significantly through the british who gave the whole country a blood bath! all this is in comparison to a solid HINDU-BUDDHIST history of more than 2500 years.so anyone who says that hindus and buddhists hate eachother is warped.

2)there is no problem between the buddhists and hindus.the problem is between the LTTE and the rest of the country.didn't you read that recent account of how some tamils in the UK were threatend to fund the LTTE,it was revealed that the LTTE was threatening to end their lives unless they paid up.this is just one example.now why would this happen if all the tamil hindus were for the LTTE? the obvious answer is because they are NOT.i for one love my sinhala buddhist brothers and sisters AS MUCH as i love my tamil hindu brothers and sisters and i know that a LOT of tamils and sinhalese feel the same way.



3)as a tamil who has studied history with an unbiased mind,i feel that many of the accusations made against the sinhala buddhist(as you also have made) are completely unfair and unjust.



4)the national language problem: during the british era the country was run on English,but more than 85% of the sri lankan population COULDN'T SPEAK english.as you must be knowing,the sinhala population of sri lanka is more than 74 % ,so when the british left the government was left with a choice

(a)continue with english as the national language even though more than 85% of the population couldn't understand it

(b)choose the language that the majority of the people (about 75% i believe since there were some tamils also who were good in sinhala ) were fluent in.



what was the most logical choice? of course it was unfortunate that there were quite a number of tamils who were displaced due to this,and many people argue that sinhala AND tamil should've been official languages.there's a TRUTH to this,but in my opinion,the situation has been blown entirely out of PROPORTION.



4)as for the universities accusation,that's completely ABSURD.



what happened was,during the days of british rule the british discriminated against the sinhala people because (as the majority of the country they had more strength.there were extremely brave tamils of course,but generally the sinhala people were regarded as the "trouble makers" by the British) it was the sinhala people who mostly revolted against the british,not the tamils.so what they did was they tried to raise the tamils above the sinhalese so that then the tamils would control the sinhalese and THEY(the british) could control the tamils and thereby control the whole country.

By the time of independence, there were more missionary-built, English-language schools in the principal Tamil-dominated city, Jaffna, than in the rest of the island. This meant that there was a disproportionate number of Sri Lankan Tamils in the civil service, medicine and law in post-independence Sri Lanka.many historians agree that the roots of the conflict stem from a "divide and rule" policy adopted by the British Raj during their occupation of Sri Lanka.



when we got our country back from the british,what happened was,each province(sri lanka is divided into sevral provinces,depending on their geographical area) was allocated a specific number of students.for example the central province allocated number of students that can be accepted for university studies is 30.this selection is based on A/L exam results and nothing more.no racial or religious discrimination whatsoever.



the reason for this system was that there was a big difference between the standards of development between provinces.some provinces had excellent schools while others were quite rural,so making the students of rural provinces compete with the others was unfair.why all these things are necessary is because sri lankan university education is completely FREE to sri lankans.



this did NOT purposely discriminate against tamils.this was a fair system that treated everybody alike.why the tamils felt that they were being harmed was because all this time they had been enjoying privileges that the sinhala people didn't have.when this law was passed they didn't realize that all that had happened was that their unfair PRIVILEGES had been taken away and they thought they were being discriminated against.when the reality was that all people were being treated equally now and all unfair advantages were taken away.



i won't say that the sinhalese or the tamils have been angels and there have been riots and discriminations but NOTHING would warrant this civil war.NOTHING.it's ruining the country and the people who are pro-LTTE are fools.of course the sinhalese and the tamils have had their problems but this has blown totally OUT of proportion and we're forgetting our golden history as brothers and sisters together and this whole **** is weakening and destroying our beautiful country.

now i don't know much about the situation, but i do know a little about religion. i probably would have gone about it a different way, but i understand the buddhist dislike of hinduism. many hindus should be treated like second class citizens, because they have indoctrinated many of their own into worse. they believe that everyone came from the body of one of their gods. the higher the part your ancestors came from the higher the position granted. the feet of this god became the laborers, but they don't have it the worst. the worst are the "untouchables", who are believed to have come forth by some other means. these people have nothing to look forward to. there are those among them with doctorates who work as sewer cleaners. if you were one of them and you tried to tell some of the other hindus that it wasn't right or fair then you would be lucky if all that happened was your wife being raped in front of you. if you're unlucky you survive the acid they most likely throw at you, because life for an untouchable, is closer to the christian hell than i care to contemplate.

but that could just be indian hindus, for all i know.

Firstly, answer this question - how many wars have Hinduism and Buddhism started in comparison with Christianity and Islam.

Secondly, had you bothered doing your research a little bit better, you would have known that Buddhism is actually not a separate religion in its own right. It is actually a part of Hinduism. The two religions are 90% identical and thus cannot be considered separate religions.

Thirdly, the problem in Sri Lanka is about social and political identity and not religion. There are more Hindus in Sri Lanka than there are of any other religion. The sri Lankans are NOT trying to isolate the Tamils. The Sinhalese simply want to keep their culture and identity alive (afterall they are the majority). It is actually the Tamils that have not bothered to make any real effort at integration and assimilation.
