Well it depends what you do for a living. I suggest you consult www.immi.gov.org and look at the required occupations list, which does refer to permanent residency but will give you an idea of what sort of skills they require.
You shouldnt tell immigration of your plans when you arrive, as they may suggest you are entering the country under false pretences and send you home - in extreme cases!
Then you need to find an employer who will agree to nominate you to the dept. They will get a number and a pack back and then you will need to apply to the dept. You may need a medical depending on what line of work you are in, this costs around 300 AUD.
When I did it, it took 5 weeks to process through the local visa office. If you do it off shore then it can take anything up to a year I hear from others
If you are a Nurse you will be red carpeted in, and hairdressing also seems to be a good number. In fact anything with a skill shortage involved. Although i do have pommie friends who are in building and clerical work.
Check out the above website, all the forms and info is there.
Go for it! Its a great country to live in, I've no regrets!

As others have pronounced, that's no longer difficult to get a working trip visa for Australia on your circumstances. that's no longer impossible to locate artwork without visa, although that's difficult, if in uncomplicated terms considering the fact which you're competing against a good number of travelers who've the ideal visa, and employers are attentive to the prefer for a visa. you're in all possibility to finally end up with the sh*ttiest jobs, that human beings with respected visas won't take, working for employers who've a reason to fly under the radar themselves. the cost of the WH visa isn't trivial, yet skipping that's a pretend financial equipment. no longer getting it is going to quite much relatively cost you extra in lost or decrease wages, and an lack of ability to reclaim tax once you flow away Australia.

in response to a person who answered above (with a very formidable answer i might add), that website is www.immi.gov.au not .org. Good luck trying to get in. Immigration are pretty strict and so your going to need to be healthy, with no criminal record and not a terrorist. (hehe)
