my friends say are arms a quite big, but they dont look that big to me. I also am a vegetarian and i have never had any protein shakes. i eat just over 2000 calories a day. i get the feeling that the more u work ur muscles the bigger they get, rather than eating 100grams or protein a day and training every other day. i train by biceps nearly everyday and do 2 sets of 10 reps. i have been doing this for about 2 yrs.

There are many paths to fitness though in my experience I haven't noticed that "the more you work the bigger your muscles get" is necessarily true for most people.

Regardless, I think what has probably happened is that your body has gotten used to the workout you are doing. The human muscular system is adaptive and when you lift weights you are stressing your muscle fibers and then they heal between workouts and you grow stronger. If you do the exact same workout in time you are not really stressing your muscles and hence you are not going to grow past a certain point. If course there is also a matter of other factors such as age, genetic, etc. in determining muscle size.

I would start by adding additional sets to your workout and gradually increasing the weight. Here is a sample workout to get you started. Try this workout and then in about two months change it. You might also consider buying a book on bodybuilding or picking up some magazines in the meantime. The more information you have, the better the chance you will attain your goals.

Sample Workout:

Try doing this three days a week, M/W/F are good days.

Warm up with 2 sets of barbell curls for (12 reps, rest about 30 seconds and do another set) Use just the bar or a very light weight so you don't get a pump, i.e. you don't get that burning sensation in your biceps. This is just to warm up the area for heavier work.

4 sets of bicep curls with barbell for 8 reps with about a minute rest between sets. Use a weight where you can get all 8 reps but the last one or two are hard.

On the last set shake out your arms quickly and go to this next exercise without any rest.

4 sets of preacher curls: Use a weight you can do 15-20 reps and only take about 15 seconds between sets. What you are going for here is the pump.

With these exercises, especially the first one, work to where you can do 12 reps on a set, and when you reach that point, add a little weight and drop your repetitions back down to 8.

Again, after about two months completely change what you are doing in order to give your body a chance to adapt to something else. Good luck with your workouts!

Have you ever heard of Pavel Statsouline? He's called the Evil Russian. He wrote thesis on working out and why we work out.

Why are we obsessed about muscle size and not performance? Did you know there's a way to work out to have a ridged body that can do awesome things? Did you know that body builders can barely walk up the steps without getting winded? People who work out for performance can climb buildings with team gear, kick butt, ruck 18 miles home and then party all night. SWAT, SF, Force Recon and Spetznas work out this way.

It's only two sets of five of any weighted exercise. 8 to 16 day cycle. Start with a ridiculously low weight and add weight to it every day. When you get to 90% of your max, start a new cycle but on day 2 of the previous cycle and do as many days as you did with the previous cycle but ending with a day later than the earlier one. Make sure you do dead lifts and back extensions. Working out this way is how the Bulgarian finally broke the Chinese lifting record. He was like 5'5" and not big and bulky. Working out this way can also never make you sore so if you're a martial artist, you can fight in the tournament the same day you work out because you only go to 90% max. Personal trainers and most Americans say, "You can't get growth if you don't go to failure." I say I'd rather have steel cables as muscles that make me do amazing things without the injuries related with going to muscle failure.

Think about it. Why size instead of performance?

Maybe your body size is all part of the genetics you inherited from your family. Those who need added help were probably born with a much smaller genetic structure, hence the xtra protein etc.

DIfferent folks, different strokes. There is no singular blueprint and what works for you may not work for another.

What was the question?
