How does a car idling work?

How does a car idling work? When a car is in drive but stopped and the engine is running, how come the driveshaft doesnt turn?

If it's a manual transmission, the clutch is disengaged so there is no power transferred. For an automatic, there is minor torque applied and when the break is pressed, the transmission has slippage designed into it
