My little westie caught and killed a bird in the garden. He was picking it up and running around with it then dropped it ands started licking it......he thought it wanted to play with him. When I finally got the bird off him it was dead!! 1: I thought birds were quicker than dogs 2: Does this constitute murder!

My Yorkie has killed 2 birds in his 5 years ,he used to have a pidgeon that would sit just out of his reach and annoy him until the oneday the pidgeon thought he was indoors ,alas he wasn,t and that was the end of that bird.He did get a baby bird once which was really upsetting but I dont think I would ever be able to stop him if he had the chance.I cant let him off his lead near the river either as he will go in and try for the ducks or swans.I just think if that is in the dogs nature it something we have to accept even if we dont like it.I hate it

Of course it doesn't constitute murder. Before dogs were domesticated, they caught and killed their own food. This is still instinctive in them. Also, a Westie is a terrier, they were bred to catch rats and small game. Don't get upset with your dog for doing what comes naturally

1. Birds are quicker, but dogs and cats are smarter than birds, especially of baby birds who start learning the world at this time of year.
2. It doesn't constitute murder, but hunting. In my opinion, humans should know better than to kill innocent birds, so hunting is murder in a way, but animals just follow their instincts.
3.Anyway, you should not reward your dog when he did this. You should have told him No and showed him contempt and show him that you were not pleased. However, it's too late to show thaat now, it only works when he is caught on the act, he won't understand why you are angry with him now if you try to show him you are not pleased.

West Highland terriers bred for ratting originaly so small things on the floor are going to attract its attention and his inbred instincts kick in, he was playing with it cos he was pleased with what he had done also at this time of year there are quite a lot of very young birds about who don't know whats dangerous and what isn't so they are easy to catch..so not murder just instinct and bad timing..

It is just a natural thing for your Westie to do, although it is quite unusual for dogs to be able to catch a bird. Usually cats bring home little 'presents' of birds which they catch, and present them to their owners. I have heard of dogs catching birds but my two dogs have never done this. It isn't anything to worry about though, as your Westie is just being playful and very observant.

LOL my black lab mix did that with a bird who was stuck in the window screen...I opened the door to free it and it fell to the ground and she was just ON it (black labs are bird dogs as far as I know). The bird may have been injured or something. Murder only occurs in humans my dear...it's nature, not murder.

My youngest German Shepherd sits under the fir tree at the back of my house, where collared doves roost and nest, she has so far killed 2, the first when she was just 4 months old, she was very pleased with herself, but I wasn't very happy. Dogs do kill things, it's nature.

every dog does that . it is there hunting and killing instinct. when they do catch a bird though (or any type of animal) you should probably not let them eat it. if they get one then you can take it away then give them some other toy to play with. because it might have a disease and you dont want your dog to get it.

to answer your question. yes dogs catches and then kill it`. . well.. she did it today for the first time. I was so grossed out`. it was a full grown bird and it was in the garden trying to find some worm .. until she ran through them and saw one still flying low.. she catches it and ran around with it and sat down about to chow down .. but i took it away .. and it was dead. i yelled at her so she got sad and sat there watching the dead bird. mine wasn't even a terrier .. it`s a chow mix with lab` ...

My dog does it as well. But lucky for me the birds were faster than she is. I try to get it out of her but I really did try and nothing work for me. Lucky she did not caught one she try when she has the change. So I leave her to do her stuff
