Is it possible he belongs to another family, and just shows up for some attention and extra food?

Oh I have a cat that loves outside too- I dont understand either- She crys at the door and is very upset that I dont let her out- but now I have learned to go outside with her for a hour or two each day. I play with her outside. I noticed sence I have done this she is wanting more attention from me - which is great!! You could always use a leash for you know your cat is safe. And then you can allow him to go out when he wants and he will be a lot happier when you do alllow him to .
Good luck

He'll only get worse if you don't let him outside.
Best way to get him to be safe outdoors is to train him. Contrary to some people's belief it's easily done, as many of us know. Bring him near a car that's starting up on the road and he'll never go near a car. If you go outside on a leash/halter and walk along the road, he'll shy away from roads since he knows cars go there. The more he sees these things, the less he's in dager since the less he'll be near them.
While on the leash, walk past people's houses that have fenced in dogs. He'll soon realise that avoiding them is best.
All my cats have always been indoor/outdoor, and not once has been run over, stolen, lost or gone near another cat to get into a fight and get any disease, they've all had all their shots, been properly identified by chip and collar with tag, (put on properly so it cannot snag on anything or cause them harm), and they've all lived over 15 years. It can be done if you're smart and teach your cat well.

This is a tough one. Cats are indeed smart enough to go outside and get back etc. It also depends where you live, though. My friends in a London suburb with a lot of green and no traffic let their cat outside. However, even in the ideal neighbourhood, if the cat goes outside accidents can happen. He can get run over by a car, killed by a dog, fight with another cat, or simply get lost. They like going out, especially if they're used to it, but it's your decision. At least, make sure if he is allowed to get out to have a collar with a name tag with your telephone number on(the collar must be elastic, so that he doesn't choke if the collar is hooked somewhere),to have regular vaccination, deworming and flea protection, and a microchip can help if he's lost.

No you are right it is not safe to let them outside really, you could install one of those cages that lead from inside the house to the outside without the cat getting away but he is still outside, but of course they are expensive. A friend of mine has one that leads all the way to the roof, the cat is always a safe that way.

If it was me I'd let him out. Most cats need to go out to get some fresh air and hunt and stuff. 2 days is a little long to be gone tho.

if the cat has been fixed then i should think he'd be fine outside.as long as he knows your house he will run in when he gets scared.leave a window open and let him out of it in his own time.leave it open and then when he wants to come in he can do so.that is how i've trained my cats and they are all fine outside.
