Saraswati is Godess of Wisdom or Knowledge. She is the feminine principle of Brahma, the Lord of creation. She is adored with "Veena", the musical instrument. Godess Saraswathi once incarnated as 'Vidya Bharati', the consort of 'Mandana Misra. When Adhi Sankara(an incarnation of Shiva) drew Mandana Misra into an intellectual arguement, Vidya Bharati was asked to be the judge, though she is the consort of Mandana Misra. She is so virtuous, when her husband was defeated she two embraced sanyasa as her husband. She is the master of all Vidya and Sasthras.

If you are asking about Godess Saraswati, here is the answer.
Saraswati is the godess of learning (not of wisdom). She is shown in pictures in human form wearing white Sari with Veena in her hands. She seats on a peacock throne. This is her animated (imagined form).
As I can tell you for sure, all hindu gods are in reality, powers of nature. Learning is a power of nature and the godess is Saraswati. Simlarly, wisdom is a power of nature and the God is Ganapati.
Now if you are asking about Maa Saraswati,
the hindu mystic by that name, someone has already answered.

Maa Saraswathi is depicted as one of the three divine forms of the Godess. This form is shown as the form of knowledge and learning. Saraswathi Devi is depicted as the Wife of Lord Brahma(Virinchi) who is the Lord of creation. This incedentally depicts that anyone created should first gain Knowledge.

Sarawathi is also known as Vidhya, Sharadha, Bharathi and Vaani. She is depicted dressed in white. this symbolises Purity. You should be pure at heart to learn. In her four Hands, One hand has a Book which means, she herself is still learning and means Learning has no end. "Known is a drop, Unknown is a ocean." Another hand has Veena which means you need also to know some kind of soft knowledge to sooth mind. Another hand is seen meditating - meaning always be devoted to God. The fourth hand shows her blessing.

Koothanur, a village in TamilNadu has a temple espesially for the Lordess of Knowledge. She is prayed to as the Lordess of Kashmir.
" Namaste Sharade Devi KashmiraPura Vasini, Tvamaham Prarthaye Nithyam, VidhyaDhanam Pradehime"

We pray to all books and equpiments as form of Saraswathi.

She is the Goddess of Knowledge.

@Thomas : Last time I saw your God, I was at the barber's shop. unfortunately he didn't have the money so the barber crucified him . When he said that he was of virgin birth, the barber said , "Yeah I know Christians believe anything". Then your God said , "Today is my birthday, don't crucify me, please, I beg of you" . The barber said "Your 'followers' don't even celebrate your birthday the day you were born, how stupid does that sound" . The your God said "sorry, forgive me , I am a sissy , I am afraid of men who are circumcised ". The barber said ".... (ah I didn't know you would be reading till the very end )
Now you know what is BS- your inane and daft answer , devoid of any intelligence acting like a window , showing your underdeveloped brain . Bet your brain is smaller than any animal found in zoo .

SARASWATI - GODDESS OF LEARNING-

The literal meaning of the name Sarasvati is the one who gives the essential knowledge (Sara) of our own Self (Sva). The goddess Sarasvati is also considered the Goddess of Learning, or of education, intelligence, crafts, arts, and skills. As she is the consort of Brahma, who is considered the source of all knowledge, Sarasvati is knowledge itself. Thus, many students or even scholars may worship her for her blessings. She is, therefore, depicted as white in complexion, and quite beautiful and graceful.

She is often depicted sitting on a lotus, which symbolizes that she is founded in the experience of the Absolute Truth. Thus, she not only has the knowledge but also the experience of the Highest Reality. She holds in her four hands a vina instrument, an akshamala (prayer beads) in the right hand, and a pustaka (book) in the left, which represents the knowledge of all sciences. Holding the book or scriptures in one hand also indicates that this knowledge alone can bring us to the Truth. The vina shows the beauty of learning the fine arts. Playing her vina, she tunes the mind and intellect with her knowledge, and thus the seeker can be in harmony with the universe. The prayer beads represent all spiritual sciences, like meditation and japa (chanting the holy names of God), and, being held in the right hand, that it is more important than the secular knowledge contained in the book in her left hand. Her four arms represent her unrestricted power in the four directions. She also represents creativity, or the combination of power and intelligence, the basis of creativity.

Her name literally means the one who flows, which can be applied to thoughts, words, or the flow of a river. She is the deity of a river in the Rig-veda. Her other names include Sarada (giver of essence), Brahmi (wife of Brahma), Mahavidya (holder of supreme knowledge), Bharati (eloquence), Maha-vidya (transcendent knowledge), Arya (noble one), Maha-vani (the transcendent word), Kamadhenu (like the wish-fulfilling cow), Dhaneshvari (the divinity of wealth), and Vagishvari (mistress of speech). It is through speech that knowledge manifests in action. It is through her that language and writing is revealed.

She is also occasionally shown with five faces and eight hands, representing her additional powers. Other objects that she may hold include the pasha (noose), ankusha (goad), chakra (disc), padma (lotus), trishula (trident), and shankha (conch). Sometimes she is also seen riding on a swan, the carrier of her spouse, Brahma. At other times she is seen riding on a peacock or sitting with one nearby. The peacock represents the worldly beauty, which can distract the spiritual aspirant. The swan signifies the acquisition of wisdom and knowledge because of its ability to separate milk from water when eating, and thus acquire only the milk.

Sarasvati is also the shakti or power and consort of Brahma, the secondary creator of the universe. Thus, she is also considered a mother of the universe. In this way, she is also connected with fertility.
Saraswati is worshipped during Navaratri. In South India, Saraswati Puja is a very important festival. Major Saraswati Poojas of South India are at Kollur Temple (in Karnataka), Chottanikkara Temple and Panachikad Temple in Kerala. The last three days of Navaratri starting from Mahalaya Amavasya (the New Moon day) are dedicated to the goddess. On the ninth day of Navaratri (Mahanavami), books and all musical instruments are ceremoniously kept near the gods early at dawn and worshipped with special prayers. No studies or any performance of arts is carried out, as it is considered that the Goddess herself is blessing the books and the instruments. The festival is concluded on the tenth day of Navaratri (Vijaya Dashami) and the goddess is worshipped again before the books and the musical instruments are removed. It is customary to study on this day, which is called Vidyarambham (literally, Commencement of Knowledge).

During Vasant Panchami, which comes either at the end of January or the beginning of February, prayers and pujas are offered to her, especially by artists, musicians, scientists, doctors, and lawyers.

In Pushkar in Rajasthan, a temple has been constructed in her name on a mountain higher than that of Lord Brahmā.-
