Certainly, because fear is the labor room where religion and its twin brother --faith-- are born.

He is an Atheist, so is he saying that faith is the outcome of having fear? There are basically two kinds of fear though. Outright terror of the unknown, and reverential awe. Is he saying that the first one breeds blind faith for want of a logical way to deal with fear? If that is the case then he doesn't realize that just because outright terror invokes a panacea does not mean that reverential awe does. His premise is true, however his conclusion is wrong.

Well yes it is, Has anyone seen the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch, where every nightmarish thing happens to the "unbelievers". For centuries that was the message.
"Grovel or look what will happen"
(And to make it even more sadistic, there were many ways to grovel, but those saying who grovels and how, always said thier own means of grovelling was the only means of grovelling to avoid the "Eternal torment" )
Faith as it stands is based on sheer terror. "Turn or burn" to quote the evangelists favourite phrase.

The Bible tells us in many places that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Therefore, those with faith in God ought to have a healthy fear and respect of Him. Like Jesus said [paraphrase], do not fear men, for they can only kill the body; but, fear God the Father who can send your soul to the lake of fire and pits of darkness for eternity.
I suppose, then, you might extrapolate and say that faith is in some way directly related to fear of God, so that little faith = less fear of God.

In the absence of Faith there IS SOMETHING to fear. Ignorance of God and His Holy Word, and by that Ignorance, IF one does NOT seek out the Love and Mercy of God, one is headed to Perdition. Now that is something to fear.

well maybe if the person's faith in God is fear-based... even then, the person themself may not be in fear, but if theyre intelligent they can see fear all around them, the birds, etc., etc., all scared of being eaten, so... fear remains, everyone is looking for shelter, security, safety, ultimately ....perfect love.
Does that make more sense to you?
