Another option is to find if there is work in lieu of accommodation at the many backpacker hostels - they have contacts to most travel sites, and by spending a few weeks working in the service industry often leads to other options due to familiarisng yourself with the local area over time

majority of backpackers that come up far north Qld go for jobs on the farms
banana farms - looking for workers daily
try looking in the Cairns Post daily - and they do put them up in accommodation, especially outside Cairns in Innisfail.
