I like the German Shepherd better. I've never actually heard of a Rajapalayam until today! They look a bit like a Greyhound but with an oddly shaped head. I've read that they don't like to be touched or handled by strangers but get along fine with his family. No wonder he makes such a good watch/guard dog.

I am not familiar with the Rajapalayam. Have never heard of the dog until right this very minute.
I am familiar with the German Shepherd Dog. I have had them for 20 years and feel like they are excellent dogs. They are very, very smart and require training as well as socialization from a very early age. I would recommend a German Shepherd if you have had dogs before. They tend to want to dominate, if they can get away with it. They are like many dogs in that aspect. They need an established leader and then they do very well.
I work with mine from the moment that I get them. I teach them to COME ( I love on them like crazy and they think that they are doing something great), SIT ( they must sit before I set down their food bowl), OUT ( like out of the house, out of a certain area) STAY(don't come into an area, or the house), LOAD UP ( jump into the vehicle -I haul mine in a crate), as well as DOWN (lay down). I give my dogs positive reenforcement. People say that I train my dogs like I do my kids. They know the difference of when they are in trouble by the tone of voice that I use. All that I have to do is to change the tone of my voice and they look at me like - ok I know I am in trouble.
Good luck with what ever dog you get, BUT REMEMBER TO DO LOTS OF RESEARCH AND TALK TO BREEDERS AND OWNERS OF BOTH BREEDS. THEY CAN TELL YOU LOTS OF INFORMATION. CHECK OUT BOOKS, GO TO WEB SITES, ETC. The thing is that once you get a dog, you should be comitted to it for the life of the dog. Too many people get dogs for all the wrong reasons with out doing their home work. Then the dog is the victim of their ignorance - be it that the dog is aggressive, doesn't mind, etc. You are responsible for the animal!!!
