Enlightenement is learning the truth of things that you always "believe" to be false. It is adding new knowledge, new information. There can be no true enlightenement without acquiring knowledge. Thus Allah in the Qur'an emphasized the very core of enlightenement: that is READ!!! To read was the very first revelation given to prohet Muhammad even though he, himself, was an illiterate. Thus the Muslims who followed the prophet did not only read but also created the best civilization of humanity upon which the very foundation of our present civilization was founded: it all started in the desert of arabia and propelled the rennaisance for europe.

Go the way of Tao or the way of the Pratyeka Buddhas ( Solitary Self-realisers)
Many in ancient China, go into the forests and caves to "practice" and they had no religion of any sorts, They learn from nature, they learn the way of harmony in nature, and through deep seated contemplation they get enlightened to the true reality of life.
A class of enlightened beings ( Buddhism ) called the Pratyekabuddhas also, are self-liberators, by meditating and truly understanding the 12 causal links of life that binds one into suffering, they transcend it and gain enlightenment.
Life in itself teaches the way to leave suffering... but the path of a Solitary Practitioner is very long, very ardous and very difficult.... Many will drop off, but those who press on with Effort and perserverence... well, they gain enlightenment...

As a Christian I petition the Holy Spirit to enlighten the darkness of my mind and bring me to fuller love and knowledge of all things pertaining to God and morals.
The humanistic form of enlightenment is something infinitely less than this to me,and I am thinking here of Buddhist practices regarding this.
Human endevours to achieve some sort of enlightenment are always frought with human limitations I think.

I am Muslim. I am getting enlightening when I do prayers (not only the five times a day). And when I give something to charity... When I help someone... When I take a barrier thing from the people or cars ways away.... Many times I feel enlightening...
After any prayer, I feel I can feel things before they happen. I feel my soul is free to catch the omens and signs from God.
Some times, I feel something special about someone who is far away of me...by minutues they come to visit or they phone me.... many examples to tell.
the most important this is to feel the peace inside me.
Peace

Well becoming familiar with mainstream scientific concepts and principles will be VERY enlightening, and humbling for you or anyone else...
But if you seek only 'selective enlightenment', then you will never achieve true enlightement..
You know it makes sense..

Striving for self-knowledge, total honesty toward myself about what motivates me in my interaction with the world. The old "gnothi seauton." Religion doesn't come into it.
