Absolutely. They have been carbon dated and originated around the same time as the Dead Sea Scrolls used to form what we call the Bible.
To understand why such works would arise, you have to understand that many of the Dead Sea Scrolls were never used in a formal "book" because they did not follow the theme of what was being collected or they were not as strong in message even if they said the same thing.
Evry wonder why the Catholic Church has books of the Bible that are not usually found in the Bibles you grew up with?
In the beginning of any movement, religious or not, there are people and groups who do not agree with the majority, and interperet the times differently. In those days there were Wise Men, people who believed in an enlightened way and were thoughtful intelligent people, and some of them were mystics. What they were saying basically is that if you go to your inner self you will find answers you did not know were there, but the answers were always there waiting for you to ask.
The Gnostic Gospels have different take on the times and so, to researchers today, provide a more balanced approach and understanding.
They were like the Cabalists of the Hebrew tradition, looking for ways to join energy with their lives in a meaningful and mystical way.

Gnosticism meaning `Enlightened Ones` was a great heresy in the early church and after condemnation it appears that they wrote their own versions of the Gospels and taught these to uneducated poor people who were too afraid not to believe in them; all the Gnostic writings are false and without Apostolic authority.

They are just as real as the common gospels. I'll leave you to decide HOW real those are.
