this answer already appeared on a similar question. here it is again anyway and i hope it helps.
Language is created because of one's need to communicate...the need to express what one thinks and feels. theorist Ferdinand Saussure believes that the creation of words to signify a concept or an idea is arbitrary... others say its onomatopeic as in the ding-dong theory...
therefore, those who need it obviously were the ones who created it.
scholars have reason to believe that there is a proto-language which if i remember right was traced to Sanskrit, because of the similarities in morphology, phonology, etc... through a process that Linguists call "Elimination".
Language change is generally caused by the contact of two different languages (whether of the same race or not). in the ancient world, language is formed and/or modified by trading which obviously demands for an effective communication... a certain signifier is created for a trading concept and it becomes arbitrary to both speakers (much like our Lingua Franca of today) - this language then is called pidgin. when and if the said pidgin has already been established and become part of certain language... it is then called a creole. American English is (according to scholars) an example of a creole, while pidgin is still used in Papua New Guinea to date.
you can also try reading books on Historical Linguistics to better understand things about your query. you may just find it interesting. i do.
