So here is the situation. We just got a kitten, a little over 24 hours ago. About two hours ago, we noticed somethng moving around on him. We could not catch it, so we gave him a bath and found what the problem was, A FLEA! We found another one in a coat that he liked to sleep in but other then that, thats all we found. We have now vacuumed the whole house, and out futon. Whipped down the chairs that he sat in.... and are now washing all the covers, and clothes. We do have another cat, but she didnt like the kitten so she stayed away.... we are still going to give her a bath for the night, and tomorrow we are going to get the medication. Is there any medication anyone recommends? Is there anything else we should do to our house?

Are we freaking out too much... or not enough? Please let us know.......

You need some proper flea treatment from a vet, not ineffective stuff like flea baths.

There will not have been just two fleas. Comb the kitten and examine the hair on the comb - those black flakes on it are flea dirts, a sign that a flea infestation is present. Where fleas are on an animal, they will also be on the environment as you've discovered.

Don't even bother with flea treatments from pet shops or supermarkets, they're very ineffective and sometimes dangerous as shops are not licensed to sell the appropriate drugs. There's really no place for flea shampoos, dips and collars in modern times.

Recommend Frontline spot-on, and a spray for your house like Indorex, Acclaim or Staykil. Once you've got rid of the fleas, use of Frontline Plus on your animal every 6 weeks will keep both the cat and the environment treated.

I used to paintings as a Vet Tech and I noticed many kittens/cats are available who had been poisoned (torpid) from house owners who purchased over-the-counter flea/tick medicinal drugs ~ the vet I labored for stated it's major to get a flea medication that's for the proper weight of the animal and over-the-counter drugs are generally simply unreliable peculiarly for a kitten. The pleasant medication (earlier than I grew to become a keep at dwelling mother in 2003) was once Advantix - it particularly works nevertheless it takes an afternoon or 2 for the reason that the fleas die after they chew the animal so despite the fact that you should still see fleas they could also be to your condo so be sufferer! Also it maintains killing fleas for a entire month! They can even supply you frontline and that kills fleas and ticks despite the fact that I have by no means particularly obvious ticks on cats. I might say that it might be wiser to head forward and purchase a product you understand will paintings then to waste cash at the over-the-counter stuff (for the reason that it is high-priced too) and you understand it'll be secure.

A lot of flea treatments are too harsh for a kitten, so ask your vet for suggestions. but as to what you can do to your house one trick I learned from a friend who lived in the country and kept having this problem was to put a fairly bright night light or desk lamp near the floor with a bin of water and pour some dishsoap in it...the fleas are attracted to the light and when they fall off they fall into the vat of soapy water and drown. I know it sound tacky but it works. Also flea comb your animals sometimes it is time consuming but really very helpful. Good Luck.

My cat got fleas when I removed her flea collar due to the birth of her kittens. Our house was infested and we had to use a flea bomb; you'll know if you get bites on your ankles. Our vet recommended Revolution Flea & Tick. It works very well & you apply just once a month, even less if the flea problem is nominal. It sounds like you are doing all the right things, good luck with your new kitty.

No your not freaking too much. I get fleas every year indoors and my dog and cats live outdoors. My dog comes inside every once in awhile for a treat and goes right back outside. I always get fleas this way. I spray and vacuum but they always end up reproducing. We do eventually get rid of them though. As for medication for fleas, I really couldn't say which one would work best, I have no luck with them.

Freaking out way too much: as long as you treat the kitten, and keep the other cat on it's normal treatments, everything will be fine.

The fleas won't spread/nest in a day.

your freaking out about as much as i did.lol. i got a kitten from a horrible smelly little house and he was riddled with them, we had to wash him in flea shampoo 4times to get rid of them. the water was running brown and he had dead fleas literally falling out of him when we dried him. but what you need to realise is you cant always stop fleas. theyre small and theyre creep and crawly but you need to take charge and try to get rid of them...dont freak out because it makes the situation worse. i cant remember the name of the product i use but make sure, if you get a good 1, scrub them both as much as you can but also do it in a week or so again incase the eggs hatch.you can always tell wether a kitten or cat has fleas by looking around the neck to see dark specks which looks like dust. this is actually flea dirt which gives you the clue of wether your cat/kitten has them. fleas are small and jumpy...its doubtful your cat/kitten will ever be completly free of fleas and if so, depending if they go outside, how long.a kitten could have a flea 4 months and you mite not notice. so comb regularly if you find the odd one, dont worry, but get rid of it. if you dont congrats!lol. a wikkid good treatment to use is spot on.its in a little tube. put it the back of their neck and get protection for upto 6months. not suitable for kittens under 12weeks
