The election of President Bush has brought quite a bit of suffering to the American people in particular and the world in general. 9/11 would in all probabilty not have occured if his opponent had won instead; thousands of American troops would not have died a futile death in Iraq; hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis would not have been blown to pieces by a type of human species who have absolutely no regard for life; trillions of US dollars would not have gone down the drain in the pursuance of useless wars .....
If I could have stopped that Supreme Court decision that declared Bush the winner in that inconclusive election of Nov. 2000, history could have changed its catastrophic course by perhaps a few degrees and saved a few more lives and conserved a few more dollars...

The problem is you don't just stop one event, you alter the entire chain of events that follow. Think of all the people who wouldn't be born because their parents never meet under the circumstances they did?
Somehow prevent the assasination of JFK or Martin Luther King? What of all the social movements that followed their tragic deaths? Maybe those never happen?
Avert the Holocaust? Could one person somehow do that?
Prevent the attack on Pearl Harbor and save thousands of lives, but perhaps then America doesn't enter the war until too late, and the Nazis win WWII?
What if the Civil War never happened?
Or if there were no slaves taken from Africa?
Or what if Jesus wasn't crucified?
I don't know how anyone could pick one event, the impact is so far beyond our ability to predict.

To prevent the deaths of John F. Kennedy and Jimi Hendrix.
Oh, and to put bill clinton in a permanent coma when I had the chance in the '80s. That would be the most important thing I could have done for my country, but unfortunately didn't do.

The creation of the Atomic Bomb. Einstein himself, after helping to brainstorm the bomb, said something to this effect " If the nuclear bomb is deployed in a war, then the next war after will be fought with sticks and stones".
