I heard from someone that I should take up smoking cigarettes so that when I'm frustrated or really hopeless I just smoke a ciggy and I relax, rather than let it build or hit myself. Would this actually work?

Oh my god that is totally WRONG. Cigarettes are a nightmare to stop smoking once you've started. They actually make your nervous system worse and everytime you stress out you become dependant on ciggies.
Talk to your doctor about your anxiety and stress. DO NOT take up any drugs! That only makes the problem worse.
Trust me I'e been there.

You are better off to just put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it to come to your senses. This is how I started smoking and I am fighting the battle of my life with lung disease all my life on oxygen, lung resection, almost died and now I'm fighting cancer. Once you start, that first cig may relax you for a few moments but it is not really going to help matters. I could tell you how bad it is for you but it will become part of you and a habit. Would you like to kiss an ashtray? Address what causes you to become so frustrated take deep breathes imagine a time of feeling of peace and love in your mind and go there instead. You will only make matters worse if you smoke. I know I still smoke and stopping for me will change nothing it doesn't reduce your risk of lung cancer after you quit for 20 years. I hope you take this advice. Use your brain please don't sit on it.

Well, yes and no. You'll get addicted and then you'll stress out more because you're craving a smoke, but once you get it, you'll relax. Niccotine is a stimulant, but because of the addiction, you'll feel calm. You'll be more preoccupied with the addiction than your other issues, but you're other issues will still be there. You may just smoke more than the average first time smoker. It's strange I know! Very unhealthy advice though and besides, it's expensive and hard to quit. I used to smoke, so I know.

There are better ways to deal. Try exercise, deep breathing or writing. You may also want to consider counselling.

It would be a temporary fix for what seems to be a deeper problem. i know that smoking helps me sometimes when i'm really stressed or frustrated. you have to understand a lot of people really hate smoking and your not going to get an unbiase opinion on here. if you feel like it would help, why not give it a try. if you feel like you have severe anger and depression, you may need to see a doctor and get some professional help. if your just having trouble with minor stresses of daily life and your really curious about smoking, give it a try and see if it helps. if it doesnt, then stop. if you dont like it, then stop. but dont let people scare you from trying it. just trying one or two cigarettes wont make you automatically addicted or doomed to getting cancer. in the end, do what you feel is right.

No. It is not a good idea. Especially for you because it'll be just one more addiction; one more distraction instead of focusing on your issues.
In addition, you'll have more respiratory infections, get sicker more often, your clothes will stink and your mouth will taste like an ashtray.
Walk. Play with a pet. Write. Paint. Make a dummy and beat the crap out of it. Fill a burlap sack with light bulbs and whack it with stick. Bike. Skateboard. Listen to music that soothes you. Slow your breathing down and consciously relax each part of your body. Cook. Take up yoga. Take up yodeling. Just find something else.

the thing that relaxes people from the act of smoking is the action of taking deep breathes. the chemicals within cigarettes won't help your health or irritability. try taking a nap when you have some free time or go for a run. i'm serious about this. don't pass these options off without trying. you need to let yourself recuperate. recuperating will relieve the pent-up stress that's creating your anxiety and jitters. clear your mind of what's bothering you by doing something physical or something that's relaxing. try talking to a close friend or family member if things won't get out of your head. sometimes just talking about stuff helps immensely. i hope things get better for you soon.

NO NO NO NO NO!!! Cigarette smoking affects the mind by reducing oxygen to the brain, hence where people get the euphoric feeling. As stupid as this might sound, exercise is the best way to cope with mild to moderate depression and stress. By getting your cardiovascular system pumping you are releasing natural endorphines which give you that "high" and feeling of destress. Plus it is a healthier alternative to smoking. Drinking alcohol also tricks the brain by lowering your inhibitions, but definitely not what you want to do to your body. If you think your depression or stress may be out of your control, seek medical advice. But please don't start popping pills for the sake of just popping pills. The healthiest route is the better route, and it works!
