Maybe because the matter is so large that people don't know what they can do about it. They think only governments and large corporations are large enough to have an effect.
But acting on global warming is like voting. If the majority of people each make a small effort to reduce pollution the total effect will be very large.
The ways to reduce global warming are well known. Basically, use less fossil fuels anyway you can.
There is also a new way that is just becoming popular. You can buy a very small portion of a green energy project such as a wind turbine farm. Just a few dollars is OK. All the dollars from many people are combined to make the project possible.
People pay to become "carbon neutral". They calculate how much carbon dioxide they create through driving, flying or heating, then they pay for a small part of a green energy project that will reduce carbon dioxide by the same amount.
It is not expense. About $10 to "neutralize" the carbon dioxide from a 2000 mile plane trip.
The web site I use to do this is listed below. I shows the projects and has a calculator where you can find out how much carbon you create and make a donation to a project.
If the majority of people did this we would have many new sources of green energy, less carbon dioxide and less global warming.
I know a few people who do this now. It's a good start.

You know, some years ago I wrote a paper my freshman year in High school on Global freezing argueing against cfc's in the atmoshere and Carbon Dioxide (a naturally occuring element) . The paper was spawned by a front page article on Time magazine spouting the impending disaster of global freezing. The thing is, its the same present, just different wrapping.
1) Now the threat is global warming, a complete 180. And what are we talking about? Studies show a 3 degree tempature rise in North America since 1905. Wow, 3 degree's in over a hundred year period. question is how do you even know that those tempeture reading's were correct to begin with? A hundred years ago people used the bathroom in an out house and rode horse and buggy. And there was no digital thermometer so the margin of error is aproxamentaly 5 degree's because of the mercury measurements. Hell, here in Houston, South Houston temps vary from North Houston by as much as 4 degree's! Thats the same city!
2) Ok, lets just say the earth is warming up for arguement sake. The earth always has. See, prior to human's even occupying the earth, it has endured several ice ages and warming periods. The idea that just becuase the earth is changing is somehow humans fault is a hard pill to swallow. Mount Penetoubo, Mount Saint Helens and Hawaii's Mount Kilauea (not to mention 1,000's I didn't mention) have belched Millions of tons of Carbon Dioxide, Sulfer and other toxins into the atmosphere for over 70 millions years. Much more than man ever could. The point is that the earth warms and cools as a ever changing, non stoppable living being. The earth is alive with activity, and no U.S. taxpayer financed scheme would make much of a difference.
3) Ok, say that I am wrong, it is somehow proven cars and power plants produce all the world whoas through real sceintific method, not junk science. The U.S. will spend billions of taxpayers dollars to punish the evil doers. The Kyoto treaty that both Bush and Clinton passed on signing targeted only the riches countries. Most of the riches countries already have some type of regulatory government agency that mandates what "are" and "not" acceptable levels of pollutants. It's the worlds worst abusers (usually the most poor countries) that would be exempt from the Kyoto treaty. Countries like Mexico, N.Korea and China. So what good woud it do to slap American companies with more and more regulations and laws when our neighbor and most Asian countries are exempt and could continue to polute? By the way, the Kyoto treaty was created in Kyoto Japan (hense its name) and the Japanese even passed on this bad legislation. That should tell you something right there. We already have large corporations outsourcing (AT&T, Compaq, among others) and leaving the U.S. (Haliburton recently changed its headquarters from Houston to Dubai in the United Arab Emerates), what do you think would happen when the government applies more regulations and hurdles to operate in the U.S.? They'll leave of course, and some other country will benefit from their presence or more of the costs would be passed on to the consumer (me and you). You might think right now that you will be willing to pay a litte extra for some goods beacuse that little financial sacrafice is good trade off for a clean enviroment. But it will effect all aspects of your life! From clothes, cars, food, electronics and toothpaste all goods will be effected. GM, Ford and Dodge all have a large percentage of vehicles built in Mexico already. I really like my job (and eating, housing ect.) and don't want to see it go overseas for cheaper operating costs and labor. Which is what will happen if more goofy regulations are imposed on American companies.
Its not that I don't want a clean enviroment, that's absurd! Everyone wants clean air to breathe and water to drink. I just think a knee jerk reaction to "Global warming" is not the answer. What we need are logical compremises that won't burden American public with increased taxes, and corporation's with unnessesary regulations and costs. We need to offer the major polluting countries incentives to bring their pollution under control and continue developing new technologies which would curve our appetite for petroleum.
The consequences of taxpayer / corporation

Hi there
No one cares about global warming is because right now its not affecting us. The effects of global warming will be coming after some 200- 300 years probably. By that time u wont be alive also. It is a matter of concern cause it is going to affect your childrens. If we dont do anything right now, future will be disaster.
Indians have a easy going nature, they dont do anything unless getting affected by these things...
But many international organization is taking this matter very seriously. In europe government is making lot rules regaring pollution.
And there is not much promotion being done on this matter, as currently we are facing many other problems, like population, political issues, reservations...etc..
we need to start promoting the affects of global warming...
Anyways you just enjoy the current moments or do something for global warming to save ur childrens...:-)
Regards
Chris

In the seventies people were going through all of this stuff in reverse---"We're heading into an ice age!! How do we stop it?!!!" It's like the "Chicken Little" syndrome. The sky is falling! The sky is falling!!
The earth goes through these changes as part of it's natural cycle. It has always been going on, but now it has become political propaganda.
In 2003 my nephew found the skull of a bison on the top of a 13,000 foot mountain ridge in the Colorado Rockies. It was carbon dated back 442 years. It has been under an ice field for (according to the scientists) about 420 years. (This they did agree on) They said that under normal conditions, the bones would have decayed in approx. 20 years. In an interview one scientists said this proves global warming because of the melting ice field. In the liberal media, this was the only opinion that was printed. However, other scientists said that finding the skull (and other bones) up on the top of the mountain shows that about 442 years ago, there was no ice field there, that it was in fact grazing land for bison. Logically, which makes more sense? Just part of the natural cycle.
Don't buy into scare tactics. There are scientists on both sides of the question. Check them both out.

Good question! Actually, people in many countries are doing things already to slow down the climate changes. In the U.S. there are people who care, but without the backing of the government some people won't budge on their own. This is a serious matter and most of the planet wants it to stop. There are many conferences and planning meetings going on about best ways to "fix" this. The best thing we can all do is to take a first step. I may not be able to afford a hybrid car, but I drive a small car that gets good mileage. I've also changed my regular water heater to a tankless water heater which saves a lot on energy. I use energy efficient bulbs. And I recycle everything.
The best way to show you care is to do whatever you can. Hopefully, others will see what is available for them to do and they will also take that first step.

May I ask from what basis are you forming your opinion from? Truth be known, there is no for sure way to know how many are taking this issue serious! I think the question to ask is "Can anybody share more information on ways to help prevent global warming from happening so quickly?" With the many answers, there will be more resources readily available for people to research the topic and take action, if they so choose.
I really didn't have my mind so focused on the issue, until I found an email linking me to.... here's a resource I wanna share... www.better.yahoo.com/planet
I wasn't sure of all the little things I could do as an individual and as apart of a community...to make much of a difference. Here not only did it give me a list of things to change, it gives me direction on how to begin a change!!
So if you are really wanting to make a difference... stop asking why and inform people of what they can do to help our planet last longer! Although, I'm glad you asked now, because who knows how many people may stop to read, take interest and pass along the insight!!
xoxo

About 15 years ago, when I first learned about global warming in environmental studies classes, there was a lot of theory and little data to support this new issue. I'm glad to see that finally there is an upwelling of demand, albeit 10 years behind the rest of the world, for a change in energy policy to mitigate global climate change. Compared to then, we're looking much more unified in this movement, and just keep it up, and do those little things every day, it adds up.

Actually, I doubt it's that people don't care. However, there are scientists that don't believe global warming is in fact occurring, and that this is just a planetary cycle we're going through. There are other people still that believe if there IS global warming, it's preventing larger catastrophe's (like polar shifts).

Mankind is made like that...We just don't care until it's too late...It's the money we're after...At the moment USA are to be held the most responsible for the problem; they did not accept Kyoto protocol rules which are too liberal anyway...
The way international community acts and regarding the fact that even accepted measures are unlike to be applied fully we face hopeless situation !

apparently the leaders of every nation don't look any further beyond their 4 year terms in office....stressing on developments - economic, foreign-relations and pulling votes - and ignorantly pretending global warming has nothing to do with a single country.... and usually giving excuses like "it requires the world's collective effort.."
How stupid can these leaders get?
As a result of their selfishness and short-sightedness, little emphasis is stressed by the media... and we feel complacent with our current state of living, believing that should global warming and its implications erupted full-scale, there's still nothing to worry about.
