Hi,
If you are an avid web-surfer then you most definitely need an anti-virus. In fact you probably need more than one line of defense.
Ideally Windows XP should be supported with an antivirus, a spyware/adware removal tool, and one firewall to ensure that these things don't get into your system in the first place.
If you are not rally an avid surfer.. sure, it can do without an antivirus.

Yes it can. Stay away from porn and software "sharing" websites and you can make it. Antivirus software I've found to be more of a bother than anything, no worst resource hog.
It all depends on your computing habits but I run mine without antivirus.
Viruses are like global warming, every alarmist out there will tell you to load your machine up with antivirus software, and so will the companies profiting off of you buying this.

Well it all depends on how many person's uses the computer, and only if you alone are using it, you'll have to be really careful of all the emails you receive, and websites you visit.
In addition you also need to be careful of USB memory sticks or floppies or re-writable CDs/DVDs.
Viruses are most generally transmitted in the above mentioned ways.
And you'll have no way of knowing if a virus is on your computer or not.

No, If you want to survive without Anti-Virus, get a mac.
Be aware that there are free anti virus programs out there. Like Norton from google:http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer_required.html?hl=en&gl=us
or BitDefender:
