It is not hard at all for me to tell my 13 year old son "no" to his requests, but I do hear him out (most of the time at least) as to why he thinks he should be able to do or have something, but as he is at an age where he is constantly testing his limits, he hear "no" more times than "yes".

I open to negotiations on some small things (like letting him hang out with his friends or playing a video game a half hour longer in exchange for him taking on an additional tasks).

My son does not get an allowance; if he wants money, he knows he has to earn it by doing chores around the house and it has really helped him become a more savvy consumer because he knows what he had to do in order to earn his money, how much things cost, and whether he wants something bad enough to spend the money, or save up for something bigger.

Usually when my sons asked me for something which i thought would not be appropriate, I will say 'No', which they will argue with me to make sure i give in.

However, sometimes i feel that if their requests are reasonable, i would usually give in, but with an explaination to let them know that it's not an always 'YES' and I would let them know the reason of me saying that.

I have only one daughter and I give her everything which please her but as all only child she is too selfish which is unpleasant to me, she practically don't ask for, but I know what she need, she is now 21. I never miss my words because when I was 13 my father make me work the whole Sunday so as to bring me skate in a hall for 50cents/hours at that time, HE DID NOT.
