Yes, infact more so over a period of time than doing cardio. This is because during a session, (an hour) you will burn about 2-300 cals depending on the intensity, but after the session, your metabolism rises significantly as your body requires food to repair the worn muscles. This period the 'afterburn' effect has to be filled with high quality foods to allow your body to recover. Also, your body will burn an extra 50 cals per extra lb of muscle you gain. So, for 5 lbs, thats 250 cals thanks!

Of course--any movement that you do burns calories. You even burn calories reading a book. You burn calories just by existing. Now the real thing that should matter to you is what builds muscle. If you want to have a body builder body then lifting weights is a good thing. If you just want to lose some inches of fat on your arms, do something else like aerobics, push ups, or use weights under 5 pounds.

definitely! it depends, though, on the type of lifting you do. If you are lifting light weights, don't expect any major dent in calories, or in your body. However, if you lift heavy, not only will you burn calories during the session, but your resting metabolic rate will remain increased for hours after, which is where you can see a significant amount of calories being used. The great thing is these calories are coming mostly from fats. so, train heavy, train hard, and eat well.

Weight lifting does not burn many calories during the exercise- maybe 100-200 per 45 minutes but lifting weights will build muscle and muscle burns more calories even at rest.

Everything you do burns calories. Calories are a non-physical measure for the amount of energy that can be obtained from consuming the particular foods. Everything that requires movement of any kind burns calories. You burn calories when you breath, your heart beats, when your neurons fire electrical impulses, etc.

everything you do burns calories.
body burns 50cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma).
if you meant to ask if it burns fat - then no, weight lifting burns calories, builds muscle but doesnt burn any fat.
the only fat burning exercise is cardio.

Yes, plus building muscle and bone density. Be careful not to hurt yourself though. Amateur tends to sustain injury by over-exerting themshelves such as lateral epicondylitis.
