Apparently they think that they must save us heathen atheists from the fiery hells of reason and logic. They just don't know any better!

Finally an atheist. I believe that religion is a business. At a local church of mine, I once witnessed(and then was informed this happens rather oftenly)that plain white envelopes were being passed around in a basket. When I prompted them what they were for, the 'pastor' immediately walked away without a word. When I asked someone sitting beside me, he answered it was for donations. I proceeded to watch as people stuffed fifty dollar bills into these envelopes, which were then collected by the pastor in the white basket.
If religion is what it is sold as, they would want to 'help' the people into believing whatever. They would be a non-profit organization. However, this passing around of envelopes and then the expectation that you stuff it with your month's pay are ridiculous and simply serve to prove my point, among MANY others.
Religion wants to coerce other people into joining for the money, while giving you a false sense of bliss that you hide under. These people become so darn intoxicated that they believe anything and everything these clergymen tell them, without logic, reason, or proof.
They've always wanted to control the state(and they did, in the medieval times)in order to get more money while supplying dope to the masses.

I think another way to ask your question is, "Why do so many Christian fundamentalists preach (and defend) creationism at least as strenuously as they do the message of salvation?"
The same reason the Catholic Church persecuted and/or burned at the stake those who suggested that the earth moved around the sun, that Jupiter had moons, and even that demon possession might be a physical rather than a spiritual ailment.
They fear that if one part of their scripture, or more accurately if one part of their interpretation of their scripture is proved to be wrong, then that casts doubt upon their entire scripture and their entire world-view, and doubt is not tolerable. That is why many Christians today act as if belief in creation (euphemised as "intelligent design") is nearly as important as belief in Jesus, and doubting it is blasphemous and heretical.
There is great fear of science or anything else that might cast a shadow on thier beliefs, and many teach that science is at best wrong, at worst evil. I honestly believe that some of them would burn scientists at the stake if they could.
I fear the day, if they are allowed to create the theocracy in America that they are trying to create, when scientists who would otherwise be finding cures to diseases, using genetics to create more productive and nourishing crops, discovering alternative sources of energy, and inventing new technologies to help humanity, are instead forced to devote their time to teach and to prove religious mythologies as fact, like was done in the middle ages.

It's intolerance, plain and simple.
You have had generations of people going to church because it's "the right thing to do." and they think we all should go.
Some of them have very pure motives, others not so much.
Bottom line is we are a nation of many things and we should learn to all get along.
I am not Christian and I have many friends who are. I have found this bothers them more than it does me. And, even though I'm not Christian, I can see there is a certain value in it at times. Trouble is, the message gets distorted thanks to money, power or politics.
I think it would be nice if we could go back to religion being a private spiritual connection and not one that is used as a brand name status symbol.

G-man: As a Christian, I can answer this. Religious people believe that they should take it upon themselves to "convert" others. The truth is that God does both, the "calling" (John, chapter 6, verse 44) and the converting. Christians should be seen and not heard (unless asked) because all men shall know you if you love one another. Christians should be involved with making this world a better place to be in. Conversely; there are non-Christians (Atheists & Gnostics) who have attempted to impose their beliefs - false or otherwise upon Christians.

Because they care. What a Christian attempts to do in these areas is not something bad or wrong. What bad influence has it caused? Is it for the good of people or not? I think a motive might be that the person gain eternal life, for peace, for a better way of life. What's wrong with that?

Thats a common cry by those who simply do not want their pet theory challenged.Perhaps they realize it will not stand up to serious scrutiny, Who exactly in particular is wanting to impose? Names Please? This is just a fear mongering tactic used on the unwitting public to scare them. Critical thinking is not learned by examining only one point of view. That is indoctrination. More often than not those who criticize intelligent design in this forum have never even read any of their books for themselves. They just uncritically buy what they hear.

They need to understand that they have no right to tell anyone what to believe or think. If they get something from religion, well done to them, but they should just keep it to themselves unless they're asked their opinion.
It has always surprised me that most of the really dedicated religious nut balls out there are often closet drunks, drug users, have multiple affairs, or are gay...hysterical, if they were true to themselves they wouldn't have to hide anything would they???
PS: I don't have a problem with homosexuality but I do find it funny that those who preach the loudest about the sins of homosexuality are usually gay.

I'm sure it was some TV show, not the bible, where they got that idea from. Remember that show that used an electronic microscope to try and find the smallest particle, but instead they kept finding this infinite order to everything?

All we are asking is for "equal imposition." If the evolutionists want to foist their THEORY in our educational system, all we are asking is that you allow the creationists the same opportunity.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY is god, afterall in this country, right?
