what causes this problem was that xp was installed twice into your computer! the first was aborted prematurely might be caused by a restart while copying file (thanks to the intelligent installation process microsoft has created), power outages, turned off computer while installation, then your second copy is the one that you have completely installed.

you can safely remove the first installation by looking at your root drive and look for the folders with a dollar sign, a dollar sign means its temporary, you can have it deleted.

now to address your question you can try this, go to my computer, right click then choose properties from here
choose advanced tab
then startup and recovery click settings
a dialog window will pop up
you can play with the settings
for your question click on the system startup
you will see below the edit button
a notepad will open having all the values for your startup,
"BEWARE" here ok, first take a look at the default
after the timeout=X line
that is your default working system (current) which actually means the second line is the one you have to delete, to make sure, and just to make sure you have removed the correct parameter, the default values should be equal to the [operating system] values.

my example boot loader
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Area 23 - Developers Section" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

its just a matter of tweaking have courage, if a problem should arise let me know, i'll lend a hand,

you can leave the timer to any values as one operating system is more than enough to load it straight.

goodluck!!!

Repair the Windows installation using the installation disk. Insert it and restart. When you get to the correct screen, choose repair instead of reinstall and choose the partition where you installed Windows. Once it is done, hey presto! everything's gone. Just one of the problems with Microsoft Windows I presume!

well you get that screen because when it was upgraded to xp it was a fresh install instead of an upgrade. To get rid of this insert the xp disc and upgrade it. this will get rid of that option

edit the boot.ini
leave only the default setting
set the time to 0
save changes ( you need to set the attribute from read only to write )
reboot
