I dont have a DVD disc but have dumped the DVD movie (VOB) onto my Hard Disk. Can the file be compressed while converting? If so how?

I want it to be converted to DAT and AVI format. I have seen lot of files on the net which have the format Divx AVI which are of lesser size but have the same or almost the same quality. How is this done?

Why DAT? DAT is usually reserved for VCD type data.

VOB's themselves are very hard to reassemble if you did not get the BUF and BUP files as well, as those are the indices.

You can use WinAvi it's a software program that converts media files, and do not bother to compress because when you convert it to DAT files, it will reduce its size to 80%.

Try AVS Video Converter http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/avs-video-tools.htm

It is very simple to use software and supports lot's of video formats: *.avi, *.divx, *.xvid, *.ifo, *.vob, *.vro, *.mp4, *.m4v, *.h263, *.h264, *.mpeg, *.mpg, *.m1v, *.m2v, *.dat, *.mpe, *.3gp, *.3g2, *.3gpp, *.3gp2, *.wmv, *.wmv-hd, *.asf, *.mov, *.qt, *.rm, *.rmvb, *.swf, *.dvr-ms, *.dv, *.dif, *.flv, *.mkv, *.ogm.

Convert them to DVIX or AVI, for example, instead of DAT

- download and install AVS Video Tools, run AVS Video Converter
- open a file or file you want to burn
- select output format (you'll see how to do it, it's really simple)
- click “Convert Now”

Also AVS Video Converter has integrated DVD/VCD burning engine.

download/install/run either:
Super from erightsoft.com or
Mediacoder transcoder

drag your .VOB file into the program then select
1) output format (in your case, .dat), including compression/bitrate, and,
2) output folder (e.g., desktop)

good luck!

they ( the vob ) are allready compressed into mpeg2 format.
temporarily rename the vob extention to .mpg and you can play them in media player ( provided you have the mpeg2 codec installed )
