People are divided between those who worry about this world and those who worry about the afterdeath world.

Religion embraces belief, or lets say hope if seen from another angle.

The environmental problem has not transponded into belief, as much as the "realists" want us to believe, but environmentalists do hope...

It always has been, or at least part of it. It was only really until Christianity became a major player in the world stage that the environment lost its mystical/religious importance. This was because god gave Christians the world to use as they wished, or to put differently, humans weren't part of the environement.

In modern times you could say that when James Lovelock developed the Gaia theory many people jumped on board without truly understanding the science (which suggests, very loosely, that the earth is a self regulating entity). Thus giving birth to a modern environmental religion of a sorts.

When a certain population decided to ignore that Global Warming exists. To those that know that this is happening to our planet, it's unbelievable that some people continue to deny it. It's like how you feel when people claim that the Holocaust never happened or that Japanese Americans were never put in internment camps and that genocide is not happening in other countries.... you get a little more passionate in trying to get your point across :-)

since the beginning of time, animism evolved to become a monotheistic movement. All cared for the environment but did not gave much emphasis as what islam did.
In the holy quran, Allah(most glorious most high)stated that He created man to be the vicegerent of this earth (caretakers)2:30(Allah is not a name of god, even christian arabs use this term, meaning god in arabic). Allah also stated "thou shall not kill unless for just cause...another is...God loved not wastage....God does not love those who defile this earth.
In the traditions of prophet mohammad(peace be upon him) he said that even on doomsday, if one has the chance to plant tree, let him.....he forbade us to pollute bodies of water, pathways, places where people congregates,,,,,he said that old clothes is part of the faith,etc..
Islam, btw is not only a religion, a place for spiritualism only, but it comprises all walks of our daily life.

It has not yet become.

But it will be, when there will be a big flood and the total number of species left will be so less that they can be carried on a boat.
