The gifts were very rare and expensive gifts.
Gold as you know is still very valuable,it helped with the cost of travel.
Frankincense was as rare as gold ,use as a perfume in offering to God.
Myrrh, was a local anesthetic, maybe used to help Mary and Jesus after the birth.
Also used in Holy oil.

Together, the three types of gifts represent three roles of Jesus the Messiah: His kingly office is represented by gold, His divinity by frankincense, and His manhood by myrrh. They offered him incense as their God; gold as their king; and myrrh, as united to a human body, subject to suffering and death.

They were wise and they knew incense is the ultimate space purifier, that's why they use it to this day at religious ceremonies.
