Hi,
my dad has cancer. Recently, he had a surgery and a part of his colon was removed due to a little tumor. The main problem was he had an overdose of Imodium, so his peristaltic movement had stopped, and that's why he actually had to have a surgery. That was 2 weeks ago.
Last week, he's discharged from the hospital. Until this moment, he's not able to eat, only a spoonful or two everytime. And he won't eat rice, moreover meat or chicken. The doctor told him to eat at least 100 grams of meat/meal, so that means 300 grams/day. In fact, he hasn't eaten more than 100 grams of meat in this week. His main staple now is Proten, a soy milk with high protein and vitamins because he has a low albumin level.

He's only allowed porridge, oatmeal, or steamed rice. And meats and chicken. Also carrots, spinach, and pumpkins. For fruit, only apple.

He feels sick all the time, and barely has the energy to walk.

I feel so helpless. Please help, guys...
Thanks...

He has. The nutritionist has given the do's and don't's and all the details for my father's diet. He simply won't take food.

I went throught this type of thing myself as did my mother who died of cancer. It is very common after abdominal surgery to experience nausea and loss of appetite. This can and should be treated with medication. My doctor told me to go back to basics and just drink the Ensure or other brand of liquid nutrition until the nausea stopped and my appetite returned. The medication began to work in about a week. This was also my mother's experience. You should ask your father's doctor about medications to stimulate your father's appetite and settle his stomach. And remember it is his right to have a second opinion about his condition. He may not be able to speak for himself right now so it is important to have a family member who will see that he gets what he needs. I hope he improves soon. My thoughts are with you.

If he isn't taking food because he is scared that he won't be able to digest it, may I suggest baby food. First, because it is made to be easy to digest, since babies don't have mature digestive systems, and second, because that might get around his fears.

Gerbers (and some other brands) make "finger food" meat sticks out of turkey or chicken or even beef. These look like tiny hot dogs, but they are very soft. And in fact they are tasty! We keep a couple jars in the glove compartment for when there is an "I need protein now" emergency for one of my kids, and we're on a long drive. I ate them some years ago for a medical reason, and was surprised that they taste quite good.

you may try ensure. it is a nutrition drink for people who can't tolorate eating. You can get a Dr. order and most insurances will cover it for you. It gives the patient vitamins and nutrituion that they aren't getting from food. His appitite may improve later on but in the mean time get him the insure. There is also boost that does the same thing. Hope your dad gets better!! Please check on the ensure or boost for him.
