I am looking for some literature that recommends or shows that central venous catheters should have bungs attached to ports. i.e , open ports are a source of infection.

I think it's universally accepted that open ports are invitation for bacteria to enter. It's an obvious no no really.
Try cinahl or medpub, or a cochrane search, or go to your local med library in your university and ask the librarian for help.

I'm afraid I don't know of any photographs for a venous catheter bung, but surely without one, you would slowly bleed to death. (I'm thinking along the lines of a Venflon ... venous catheter usually situated in the arm or leg. I've always had open ports bunged whenever I've been in hospital.)

They certainly are and open ports are not the norm in any catheter I've seen. Try going to "Ask.com" and ask your question. Also, MDAnderson.org is a good source.
