It will be a great trip with good roads all the way. I've done all sections of it a few times myself but not in one hit. There is plenty to see and provided you have a good car you will have few worries along the way.

The total distance is about 20,000km around Australia. At 100km/h it will take you 200 hours or eight and a half days of continuous driving. You will want to stop and look at things so allow five hours driving per day (some days more, some less) and it will take you 40 days. Now that's a good Biblical figure for a trip :o)

If I were doing it, I would allow an extra two weeks for stops and diversions making about eight weeks for the journey. Petrol will cost you about $1.30 a litre. The cheapest accommodation on the road is not in motels but in country pubs. It is reasonably basic but clean.

Have a great trip, it is worth doing but give yourself enough time to do it properly. If you haven't read it already, read Bill Bryson's "Down Under" for some ideas of things to do and see along the way.

Driving Around Australia

As an earlier answer said it wil depend on hom much time you want in different places and how often you stop, break etc.

I would suggest you would need (just to travel from place to place) 2-3 solid weeks. Brisbane to cairns is at least 2 days. Cairns to darwin not to sure but a few days again, as well as a few days again to perth. Perth to adelaide a day or so and again a day or so to Melbourne. Melbourne to Tasie you would fly or take the boat, only a day is needed either way.

Melbourne to brisbane is two solid days.

I would suggest fyling parts of it, we drove once Melbourne to Gold Coast to Cairns and it was long and hot.

Good luck.

Well Australia is a pretty big place, with much of the coast very beautiful so you would definitely want to linger in many places. My friend did the journey from Sydeny to Darwin (in the far north) in 3 months, but part of that was done on a bicycle, the rest by bus. When I was 3 years old (and having been in Australia for 2 years) my parents bought a caravan and travelled around about 1/3 of australia looking for a work and a nice place to live. That took more than 6 months. So unless you like to rush everything, you would probably want to plan 6-12 months. The roads at the top end these days are pretty good, but only during the wet season is there really any problem. Real Australians are very friendly and helpful, you stop your car to point percy at the porcelan pew (take a piss) and cars will stop and as if you are ok. Plan on summer in the south and winter in the north. In Darwin in winter it actually might even go below 20 during the night and only up to 30 in the day. Places to linger would be the south coast of NSW (try a town named Eden), the North Coast of NSW, North Queensland (not far north Queensland, but just North Queensland, try Townsville), the Atherton Table Lands in North Queensland, Kakadu national park in the Northern Territory, Broome in Western Australia and along the coast in the great Australian Bite. Please don't forget to go to Tasmania, or they will get upset as we always left them off the map.

it would take as long as you wanted it to.

you can drive or ride around this beautiful land of ours and take your time in doing so, to enjoy the scenery and stop here and there meet the local aboriginal tribes learn their culture and explore. I would suggest though from Bne to Cairns - take your time 3-4 days - make some stops and stay overnight in places and that would be the norm in between all cities. Except for Tassie - I would fly over - cheap enough return airfares from Melbourne. take your time - no rush........

Most Australians wouldn't be brave enough (or have enough spare time) to do that. There are some very deserted areas along the way and often it's better to take a flight between some areas, eg Perth to Darwin.

It depends on how long to are stopping at one place or another.
But if you use a trip planner, least it will give you an idea on distance, then you can work out where you want to stop and see the sights.
