If you'd like to visit the tidepools, first check the weather page of your local newspaper or another tide chart for the best times to go. For a five-day forecast of local tides, visit www.tidelinesonline.com.

When visiting tidepools, wear sneakers or other sturdy, flexible shoes and clothes you don't mind getting wet. It's fun to look and take pictures, but to protect the environment, don't touch creatures or plants or turn over rocks.

Cabrillo Beach: This beach in San Pedro features some of L.A. County's best tidepools, and it's near Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, which offers an up-close look at diverse marine species. (310) 548-7562.
Carpinteria State Beach (My personal fav): Highlights at this beach, just south of Santa Barbara, include tidepools, camping, and bird-watching. (805) 684-2811.
Crystal Cove State Park: Located in Orange County, this park stretches for three-and-a-half miles between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach and has lots of rocky coastline to explore. (949) 494-3539.
Heisler Park: One of Southern California's best tidepool spots is in Laguna Beach, just south of where Myrtle Street meets Pacific Coast Highway. (949) 494-6572.
Point Loma: Ranger walks and slide shows are available to help visitors enjoy the tidepools on the western side of Point Loma, near the Cabrillo National Monument, in San Diego. (619) 557-5450, ext. 0.

Corona del Mar Beach in Newport Beach has great tidepools too. I've visited this beach and Crystal Cove, both are excellent and the Corona del Mar tidepools are a bit more consistent with the tide. Have fun!

At the bottom of the cliffs of San Pedro there are lots of them. There is a trail to hike down there. Take Gaffey St. to the end.
