Well, it depends on what you're into.
If you're into contemporary musicals, "Wicked", "Legally Blonde", "Avenue Q", "RENT", and "The Drowsy Chaperone" all have more contemporary music. Blonde, Q, and Rent all take place in a more or less modern day society, and involve more adult themes in them. Drowsy is a very funny spoof on old musicals, so it's got a LOT of theatre humor in it. If you're not theatre savvy, I wouldn't really suggest it. Wicked is......it's Wicked. It's based on The Wizard of Oz (kind of a prequel). It's good. Pretty much everyone likes it. Tix are pretty difficult to get, though.
If you're into the classics, you've got "A Chorus Line" "Les Miserables", and "The Phantom of the Opera". All of which are "contemporary classics", all written after the 60's. ACL is kind of a "backstage musical", the whole show is an "audition" of dancers and they talk and sing about their lives. FABULOUS score, and the choreography is brilliant. Les Mis is NOT a happy show, but it is fantastic. If you're not looking for a happy-go-lucky show, I highly recommend it. Phantom has a very operatic score, so if you don't like opera music, don't go.
Then you've got your "clean and perky" shows. Completely kid friendly, and LOADS of fun to see!! right now, it's "Mary Poppins" "The Lion King" (okay, pretty much all the DIsney stuff), and "Hairspray". The Lion King is a very Broadway-Broadway show. If you're going to NYC and you're seeing one show, this is a good choice. Poppins is based off of the Disney movie, and is just plain amazing. It's very funny and very entertaining. Hairspray addresses the issue of racism, so there's actually a message in this one. It has a great score and very likeable characters.
If you want my personal opinion, I think the best shows on Broadway are "The Drowsy Chaperone" and "Mary Poppins". But pretty much everything on right now is good.

Um, the list would be in the thousands. I'm just glad that "Cats" finally went to kitty heaven. EDIT: "Anyone Can Whistle" is not a terrible show. It failed because it was about non-conformity -- not a popular subject in 1964! And it ran for nine days, not seven. If you want to learn about flop musicals, try to find a copy of the Ken Mandelbaum book "Not Since 'Carrie'" -- it's both informative and very funny.

Spring Awakening is a great high energy show with wonderful and innovative music and a timely story. The show is up for eleven Tony awards, more than any other show this year, including Best Musical, Best Featured Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, and Best Director. Everyone I have talked to has really enjoyed the show, and its message is very timely.
A Warning: Spring Awakening does contain graphic language, nudity, and sexual scenes. I would not recommend it for children.

Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Wicked, and Les Miserables. OK so Les Mis isn't still technically officially on Broadway, but hey...it comes back.

The best shows to see right now are GREY GARDENS and SPRING AWAKENING. Grey Gardens is based on the true story of Jackie Kennedy Onassis' aunt and cousin who lived in a dilapidated mansion on Long Island and were as crazy as loons. The music is great, performances sensational, and is a great night in the theatre. Spring Awakening is the story of a group of teens in Germany in the early 1900's and their journey into sexual maturity. Not as dark as it sounds. The music and story are truly 2007 and it will score most of this years' Tony Awards. If your tastes are more traditional, you can always stick with A CHORUS LINE, CHICAGO or MAMMA MIA, still packing them in.................

Definitely "Spring Awakening"...by far. Personally, I think there's better stuff Off Broadway at the moment, though.
