The alcohol kills bacteria. In the hospital we have alcohol hand wash that we use in between hand washing. It is more effective than washing your hands, but I still prefer soap and water when I accidentally touch something I want OFF my hands.

Ok, know how when you get a cut some type of alcohol based product is used to disinfect it. Well something similar is happening here. The listerine is using the alcohol to help kill the germs in your mouth. If you are wondering about those alcohol free mouthwashes, those use a different active ingredient which does something similar to the alcohol.

Listerine has a lot of alcohol in it because it makes it effective in killing the bacteria in your mouth to prevent dental diseases. The only problem with Listerine is that in a documentary I saw on tv, they said alcohol based mouth washes actually dry out your mouth (because alcohol has a drying effect) and in the long run can cause bad breath. The fresh mint smell is only temporary.

Alcohol kills bacteria.
If you talk to old Southerners, they would pour grain alcohol on kids' sores and scratches to prevent infection.

Use betadine oral antiseptic instead. :) it's better. or use Oracare (stabilized chlorine dioxide) mouthrinse. Oracare has no alcohol so it doesn't sting.
